Collector's Source.

Looks like the same deal as last year. Caked in heavy grease. "Matching Numbers" if you squint past all the electro penciling.

You buys your ticket, you spins the wheel.

Some people made out pretty good last year, or seemed happy anyway. I like the M44 I have just fine (got it off Wolverine at a gun show last year), so I've got no trouble tipping people off and letting the inventory run out.

I think these have been for sale a while now, no?

I'm wasn't very impressed with their 3% credit card surcharge so I passed on this deal a few months back. An extra $30 on the listed price doesn't seem like such a great deal on an ectropenciled rifle that I have majorly degunk as well. I went with a pristine refurb elsewhere instead.

I'm aware it's "Collector's Source" - with all the baggage that goes along with it. Just seemed like not a horrible price, even with all their surcharge this and shipment tracking fee that BS. Going rate at most places for the M44's (last I looked) was in the $375-$400 range.

Even having posted it here, I would hardly give CS a ringing endorsement... Ever... For anything...

Gun show season is also about to go into full swing. My guess is that better deals will be available through the spring.

I picked up a shooter m38 last year for 250 bucks. A museum piece it was not, but great little rifle and operates well. My point is that if you want one the pickings are slim. A lot of collectors might pass these up, but if you already shoot X54 caliber rifles, its probably not a bad deal. If you want something perfect then you should expect to pay quite a bit more.

I would be interested in knowing that as well . The quality of the current Russian Surplus being imported seems to be dropping....

While I agree, the Russian carbine market is hit and miss, and very sporadic. There are a few treasures in the pile but definitely becoming less. Who knows what is in store for the future? I picked up a few shooters a few years back just to be sure I had some, then the collector quality rifles came later when I was more picky.

You never know when is the last chance to get one? They really are nice little shooters and make good truck guns if you don't worry about a few scratches and dings.

As a rule of thumb :

Surplus I buy off the web = Shooter Grade, regardless of photo or description. That's what my expectation is. If I happen to get better, then yay, bonus! So I base my expectations on prices for guns I buy off the web accordingly.

If I'm truly looking for something collector grade (which I seldom am, I buy these things to shoot 'em and enjoy 'em), then it's a matter of trolling around gun shows, or going through private sales, where I get to see and handle what I'm buying before dropping my $$.

So long as I do that, I'm happy with what I get, because I've set my expectations in line with what tends to be reality.

I did the $195 sale last year... it was pretty damned ugly.

As I got it:

It was a lot of work but it cleaned up and made a nice shooter grade rifle. Tons of cosmo, stripped, sanded and refinished it. Most of the flaws were too deep to sand away so I left them. Sold it on the EE for more than I paid, however I put a ton of work into it.

After cleaning and refinishing, nice shooter grade rifle:

For $295, I'd pass. I'm sure some will buy though.
