So I've owned a total of three different P226's, two of which I still have. On two of three I have experienced extractor failures where the extractor hook has sheared off resulting in FTE. They are inexpensive and not to difficult to replace but just wondering if anyone else has had a rate of failure on their Sigs like me. One of the pistols was chambered in 9mm while the other is chambered in .40S&W.

I broke my second extractor on my sig x five all around last witnter. The first time a probably shot around 15,000 rounds but the second extractor gave up after less than 3,000 rounds.

Never seen that, what Gen extractor? Are you using reloads?

Not really sure which Gen extractor but both models were a few years old but not so old that they didn't have the rail.

I use all factory ammo but have run Combat Masters reloads through them as well.

Do the spent casings have any damage or marks indicating hard extractions?

Unfortunately I never thought to look and no longer have any of the brass. Interestingly enough the .40 extractor wasn't completely sheared off and was still functioning to some extend.

Having looked online and seeing what the difference is, the extractors I have and had were the two piece, so the short one.

Its hard to say if its a bad batch of extractors or something else with out those casings to inspect :( Its not normal at all as I have worked on SIGs with well over 100,00rds and no extractor issues.

There was a review of a few 9mm pistols in the Canadian gun magazine that I got for free from Silvercore. In their testing, they apparently has issues with the extractor as well. I only have 200 rounds through mine, no issues yet

I've got both long & short extractors, guessing 12 thousand rounds, no failures of any kind. I don't shoot any steel case ammo, and never let the slide slam forward without ammo or snap cap loaded in mag.

I'm a little anul about dropping the slide on an empty chamber as well so guessing this wasn't part of the cause.

The only problem I have heard about is with the X-5 in .40 with the internal extractor. It sounds like you have an external small extractor though. The only advice I would give about those is to be sure that you are installing the right parts. The extractor and the extractor pin have different part numbers depending on calibre. The differences are hard to see with the naked eye but do make a difference in performance. I once received a 9mm P229 which had the correct extractor but the wrong (.40) pin. The pistol functioned but the extractor did not fit flush into the slide and caused the hook on the extractor to wear prematurely.

Both of these Sigs were bought used but no reason to assume they didn't have factory installed extractors as they both worked for a reasonable amount of time before they failed. I did order a new extractor for the .40 cal that I still have and made it clear what caliber it was when I ordered it.

I just thought what's the chances of two extractors failing on two different guns of the same make within two years. Not high usage either as they may only get shoot one to twice a month and usually only 100 to 200 rounds each time.

Dropping the slide is a 1911 thing, not SIG. Every SIG I worked on has had the slide dropped on a empty chamber hundreds of times during dry training.

100% right. I have seen this done countless times on many SIGs during training.

When I first read this thread, I thought reloads right away but I guess that has been covered.
