Help With Choosing a Reticle

Hey CGN,

I'm brand new to shooting and have recently acquired a Ruger American .22 and a Vortex Crossfire II 3-9x40 scope with a V-Plex reticle.

I was cruising through some videos and saw the same scope with a BDC reticle which kind of intrigued me with its hash marks.

I'll most likely be target shooting at min 50 yards and hoping to reach out as far as the Ruger will let me, so my question is:

Would one reticle serve me better over the other? Thanks in advance!
 
Don't worry about the reticle just yet. Shoot the rifle, a lot. You'll know what you need/want when the time comes.
 
BDC isn't much use on a .22 once you get used to it - you'll know your drops at certain distances pretty quick.

I've been able to shoot gophers at almost 300 yards with my 10/22... granted these aren't 'one shot' kills - but you can lob them in pretty accurately after lots of practice! Never used anything but a standard duplex reticle, and it served me fine for many many years.
 
300 yards is way to far for any hunting shot with .22 LR. No .22 has sufficient energy left at 300 for ethical kills on anything.
The reticle doesn't matter much for targets at 50 yards. BDC only works with the ammo used in the testing too. Does give you an aiming point for sighting in with whatever ammo your rifle shoots best though.

If you think a .22LR doesn't have enough power to kill a gopher at 300 yards, you are sadly mistaken. "Ethical kills" on gophers eh... thanks for the lesson.
