Built "off" the action

To the question 'what kind of rifle do you hunt with' you often hear the answer 30-06. Dude, you weren't asked what cartridge you were using, what rifle do you hunt with.

We should stickie a "b!tchin' thread"... just to clean up the whinin' in the regular forums...

Only problem with that is, I might never get out of the b!tchin' thread... ;)

Thanks to all the earlier contributors here. This is an entertaining thread As a group, you've mentioned most of the language, spelling, and pronunciation glitches I've repeatedly clenched my teeth about while reading posts on CGN, or discussing firearms topics with others.
I also cringe at those who use the word "bullet" when they mean cartridge, and engage in the even more common error of referring to say, 30'06, .308W, 30-30, 7mm Rem Mag, or 35 Whelen as a rifle's calibre.
Guess I'm a FUDD, but words such a Remmy, shottie, Winny, and yoties, sound like baby talk to me.

Or "Remmy"; "Winnie"; and the worst..... "shottie".

NAA.
Actually , the term "shottie" or " shotty" as I have seen it spelled , was used long before any of us were around and comes from the heydays of the African safari !
shotguns were often referred to as " shottys" back then by both the white hunters and their clients .
sonehow over the years the term " White Hunter" has also disappeared and has been replaced by the more politically correct term " Professional Hunter"

The ones that likely drive me over the edge most times are "Micky" "Loopy" and my all time drive me crazy term " MUZZY"! I shoot a muzzle loader , and not a "trad gun" , it's a cap lock thank you very much!!AUGH!!

I always thought it was Sayco, but the I watched one of them TV shooting shows and the dude there was saying "Sacko". It was hard for me to accept it! I'm a Swede. What really is the correct way to pronounce it?
this was discussed a few years back on another website, and the Apparently the company themselves pronounce it "Sacko"
And Leupold pronounces their name "Loopold" :>)

How about the gun that shoots lights out? How many of those people do you suppose have actually used the gun to shoot lights out?
Of course the most miss used terms have to be using caliber in place of cartridge, or bullets instead of loaded rounds. I have taken advantage of the situation. When someone asked me how many bullets the magazine on my rifle would hold. I told him 50, so he immediately told me that it wasn't possible. I bet him $20 that the magazine would hold 50 bullets, and once the bet was made, I took a box of 50 bullets, opened the floorplate , dumped all 50 into the magazine, and closed the floorplate. He did argue at first, but he did pay up.

" shoot the lights out" I always figured was a term coined from the old days when a guy was good enough to actually shoot put the lights in a saloon with his pistol ,
But I have absolutely no idea where the term "Shoots like a house afire" came from!
i have read it in a book by Warren Page , and I think it was the first time I heard of it.

I thought shooting "lights out" was from the old six shooter trick of snuffing out the flame of a candle without hitting the candle...
