Never seen a mosin with brass yet, and I didn't have a 42 so I bought it :) Im thinking I may leave it in the cosmoline for abit. Bolt moves nice so I am happy.

where you get them from?

I have 2 as well, it is just random luck. They used to make the caps out of copper and brass well before WW2 and during refurbishment some newer rifles got them from the parts bin. They would be most fitting on an 192X converted dragoon rifle. I would say the stock is actually in great shape it just needs to be stripped with denatured alcohol and have the shellac reapplied. Shellac wears off quite easily with use.

I have been looking at the best choice of shellac to match the original color I have and I think it would be garnet shellac.

Don't need to worry about matching the colour, you can just strip all of it off and apply. The Russians used basically whatever colour was on hand at the time, from lighter amber, dark red, blonde, etc.
