How many mags

How many total magazines ? or how many rounds allowed in a magazine ? Cause you can carry more magazines then Rambo if you wish because you can only have one magazine in your gun at a time so as long as the magazines are within the legal limit of rounds.

Not sure where you are in Canada but here are the Alberta Hunting Regulations http://www.albertaregulations.ca/huntingregs/genregs.html#biggame Basically for big game the max is 5 rounds and for migratory birds its 3 rounds max

5 round maximum for big game in an AUTOLOADING rifle only.

I'm not being a smart a$$, but are you telling me I can hunt groundhogs with a Remington 742 in 6mm and an aftermarket 10 round mag? I believe not, anywhere. I believe I cannot take a Mini 14 out hunting with a 30 round magazine.

The SU16 takes AR15 magazines! As explained before there are 10rd magazines for the LAR-15 that will fit the AR15 rifle and therefor the SU16 as well.

So, if there are hunting regulations for big game such as 5rd max for an autoloader, then the su16 would have to use the 5rd pinned magazines while hunting big game.
Gophers and varmints usually don't specific such restrictions in the hunting regulations, so he could use 10rd LAR15 magazines in his su16 while hunting varmints as the only magazine restrictions he would have to follow is the federal firearm regulations.

I've used 10rd magazines in an su16 while hunting coyotes around here cause it was legal, but more importantly they weren't as unwieldy as the 5/30rd magazines.

I hunt coyotes in Newfoundland with several different rifles that accept the 10 round LAR-15 magazines. We are permitted to hunt with fully loaded magazines as per provincial regs. It used to be my Bluestar Swiss Arms, now it is my Tavor. I regularly carry as many mags as my chest rig will accept. If I need to carry more, I just add more pouches. There's nothing worse than being 50 miles back in the bush and running out of ammo. The chest rig allows me to carry my ammo on my person and ready to go, along with mouth calls, folding knife, FoxPro remote, GMRS radio, firestarter and energy bars. Makes for pretty good "armor" when you need to bull your way through a particularly nasty black spruce tuckamore. Think chaps for your torso. :)

When hunting with my HK SL8 I have one 5/7 AA BW mag in the rifle and a spare on me for a total of 30rds. If that does not get me through the day I'm an idiot.

My bad. I thought "all centrefire semi-automatic rifles" in Canada had to only have a maximum mag capacity of 5.
you are correct, 5 .50 beowolf = 15 .223 (point 5 of rcmp document)
but also when using pistol mags capacity is 10, some pistol mags (yes even 223 and 762 are in pistol mags) fit in rifles! wow! (point 4 of rcmp document)
please refer to the rcmp document for clarification

Sorry guys this is probably old news to a lot of you but as I said before Ive only had my license for a year and still have a lot to learn. But after a quick search of Beowulf magazines I seethat they are even advertised as holding 15 .223. That would be the answer really as I would only need one magazine then.

Now I'm really confused. It's legal to use the Beowulf magazine at full capacity in my semi auto .223?
Whats there to be confused?
full capacity Beowulf in Canada means 5 rounds of beowulf.
1 beowulf = 3 .223
3 x 5 = 15
voila

the legal capacity of the magazine is for what it was designed for, not what you happen to stuff into it thats a different calibre.

Beowulf magazine is designed for .50 Beowulf, so that means legally a maximum capacity of 5 .50 Beowulf, doesn't mention anything at all about maximum capacity in 223 as these magazines are designed for .50 Beowulf.

A magazine designed for a particular restricted rifle must have max capacity of 5 or be pinned to 5. Same goes for a restricted pistol, only the max number is 10.

As long as you don't modify a magazine you can use it in any firearm it functions in.

So .... you have a 5 round beowolf mag which normally fits 5 beowolf rounds, but you can fit 15x223 cartridges into and it fits and functions in an AR its fair game. Same goes for a 10 round LAR 15 pistol mag (223) which fits an AR. Another example is putting 13 rounds of 9mm into a 40s&w mag and shooting it through a 9mm glock.
