Hello CGN,

I'm very excited about getting into shooting as a hobby, and possibly competing if I'm any good. I've always loved guns, but was only inspired to get my PAL and get involved recently by a few friends.

My NR/R PAL should be arriving any day now, and I'm looking at purchasing my first firearm as well as joining a club. After looking through some threads, it seems like EOSC would be the best fit for me, and I'll be signing up for a new member course shortly.

I would appreciate some advice on where to purchase firearms and ammunition in Ottawa.

Presently, I'm interested in purchasing a reasonably-priced .22 rifle, a quality SKS, and eventually a S&W 686+ (handled one in my CFSC course and fell in love). Though, I'm not quite sure about the best way to go about finding these. I'm open to buying used or new.

Any advice on:

1. a good starting .22 + reasonably-priced/good value scope solution
2. Where to purchase/how to identify a quality SKS
3. Where to purchase a 686+ (only found the 6-shot version online in Ottawa, but wth not 7 shots? ;-)
4. best prices/deals on ammunition for above in Ottawa

...would be appreciated.

Also, if any of you are members of EOSC, I'd be interested in making some new friends/joining a group.

Love the site so far. Cheers, and see you out there.

Welcome to CGN. ;)

Since you are in Ottawa you might want to stop in at LeBaron's on Merrivale Road (google them, they are right near where Merivale takes a sharp right turn in direction/at Clyde I think - lived there a few years back - getting fuzzy now).

In many cases I don't know if they make any money or not on some of the rifles they sell, they are priced that low (not everything, but enough).

They do have a dedicated gun shop inside the store (which is an all round outdoor, fishing, camping kinda place) and the couple guys back behind the counter are relatively up to date as to what is on the market and have enough knowledge to intelligently answer any question you may have), plus their ammo prices are great "if" they have it in stock. Was there a month ago and they had no 243 Win in any flavour - zip, nada, nothing - didn't even have any 6mm bullets...

Worth a look to start out.

Great, thanks for the suggestion. I'll check it out.

Well, the only difference is the 7th round, right? I figured why not get the 7 over the 6, but I'm not married to it.

Yes, I've heard that. But I like taking care of my stuff, so cleaning should be fun. Any specific recommendations for cleaning? products/methods?

Cheers

Hello and welcome.
Are you wanting a 686 or 686+? If you get a revolver in stainless be ready to clean, clean, clean.
