Oil in the bore, catastrophe or myth?

Hard to spoil it. They just put a lot of oil on a gun and fired it. Since the gun didn't explode, a lot of oil must be good.
Like hitting the gun with a claw hammer, if the gun still works, you should hit your gun with a claw hammer. Another myth busted!
 
Hmm. Generally true, if you're keeping it to just a basic test of oil and function. I notice they didn't drop the guns into the sand after taking them out of the oil bath. And the viscosity of oils and greases change with temperature. They might have issues up here when it's -30. I have an interest in aviation during the Great War, and the early fighter pilots suffered from a lot of malfunctions because regular gun oil jammed up their machine guns once they reached the cold of their operational altitudes. Anyway, I'm nitpicking, but just sayin'
 
I oiled the chamber of a semi pistol once and within two clips the barrel and slide were destroyed.

I really don't like the thought of a rifle bullet hydro planing on oil as it goes out the barrel - sounds like a bulge to me. Maybe a barrel manufacturer would do an air gap test for us - before and after over-oiling.

I am off to "Want to dramatically increase how quickly you can read threads? Just turn off the display of all these annoying signatures in your User Control Panel settings!" like EdFCNM says.
 
Hey - this is great - I don't have to look at distracting nonsense in the avatars and signatures now!

I went to Forum Actions in the line up top - then to General Settings - and then down to Thread Display Options and unclicked Show Avatar and Show Signatures.

This is so much tidier. Thanks Ed
 
Now they should try something.

-Do that test in -30
-let the guns sit for 30+ mins outside before firing
-share result.

Or
- soak the guns
- drop it in the sand
- compare with an adequately lube gun
- share result.

Over lubing is not a myth. Some guns are very picky especially in the winter.
 
Swiss use grease in their bores for cleaning and storage of K31's, occasionally one would forget to wipe it out before a match...result was a pretty good puff of smoke, but that's it, no KB.
 
There's two guys who didn't pay attention in science class (I'd say physics but I suspect that topic to any depth would be too much for them). liquids don't tend to compress too well, not sure about the oil they were using but it does have mass and I'm pretty sure all of it isn't riding the gasses blowing by the bullet. Myth???? I want to see the primers on that brass before I buy that one.

I fired more than a few excessively hot loads and no boom...I'm not dumb enough to declare there's no risk because nothing happened, firing a round through a barrel stuffed with a fluid isn't going to have the same chamber pressure as a dry bore...by their logic, sticky case? no prob, I'm sure you can get another .5 grain in there...

The more I've been thinking about this the more I have to ask how did these guys become instructors????? I don't follow the current techniques so I'm totally ignorant about the personalities involved in the latest and greatest.

It's beyond me he would do what he did and declare it's a myth. Just what does he mean. Too much lube won't attract dirt...any infantryman knows that's total Bull. Won't blow up...I wonder what that first projectiles actual mass was riding down the bore with even a small amount of oil hitching a ride. I really hope that the blow by forces it out of the tube well in front of the bullet. It may, I just don't know and if I did and pulled that stunt I would declare it at the start.

I can see some dumb azz having an argument and "proving" there's no risk. Hope he survives that hunk of barrel he may be sporting that looks like a horn. Weren't there failures in M-16's due to water in the bore...or is that a myth as well?

If the M16/M4 gets submerged, just point the muzzle down to drain it out while pulling the bolt back slightly then fire away. Of course there will be residual water left in the bore, but it won't KB with that little.
Complely underwater is also OK....

I'll buy you can get away with it, maybe in a sound rifle as often as you like. Anyone know if in fact the gas blow by will clear most of the bore, or is that underwater trick "safe" because the surrounding water "supports" the rifle? I'm getting really curious about this...
