Ammo for my 6.5 Jap
Ordered 3 boxes of it..:d
guess i had better cast that old girl soon..just to be 100% that its rite

Had her for over 25 years
Never fired by myself or anyone else in that time

I figure to set the first shot free with a string .
after wrapping the important part with toilet paper.
put the gopro and a camera on her to see what happens on video.

Should that survive , should be reasonably safe to shoulder.

Will add a couple pix tonight

Or is this a bad idea ?

The Arisaka Type 38 and 99 actions are pretty much the strongest action of any WWII rifle (stronger than the 98 Mauser). Should be safe to fire especially considering your shooting the proper ammo for it (which is a fairly low pressure round).

Back in WW1, the 6.5 jap was considered the "intermediate" cartridge of the day because it was one of the weakest cartridges available. The Russians actually designed what was probably the first assault rifle near the end of the war in that caliber since they had a lot of it laying around after buying a holy sh*t-ton of ammunition and around 750,000 arisaka rifles from England and Japan.

Fun fact

Thats pretty cool , i had no idea

Fun rifle. Lots of history.
Even with a severely corroded bore my (Mum complete, mismatched bolt) Arisaka will group 4-5" at 100m. I've found that I must use the 156 or 160gr bullets as the lighter ones don't have enough bearing surface to be spun by what is left of the rifling in the barrel. No worries with handloading for it either. Lots of choices available.

This is the old war bird

what year it is? I've never shot one, let alone even held one. Let us know how it shoots!

I have no idea what year she is, but judging by the condition of the stock .
It must have seen service.
I should do a little digging on it and see what the numbers tell me.

already have the dies for it to reload, just got busy doing other things last summer

I have an Arisaka Type 38 Rifle which was given to me by a gun-shop operator in an effort to "improve the quality of his junk rack".

Found a couple of boxes of Norma factory stuff at a gun show, obtained the missing parts from a friend, took it out and shot it.

First round was from the hip, just in case. Rifle went "POP!!" real loud, almost zip recoil, perfect empty.

Put the next four onto a target at 145 yards, off the bags. Entire group disappears under a quarter.

I'm happy.

Handloads do not want to shoot as well..... yet. Be advised that these have 4-groove Metford rifling which causes the bullet to distort a great deal. Softest jackets you can find should be the best.

Nice toy! Have fun!

Well the bore is pretty ugly lol.
been scrubbing it...
looks like rifling in it still...we shall see how much i guess.

I dont care if it is a great shooter or not.
i just want to shoot the thing once in a while.

Kinda keep it alive so to say:d

FWIW i had to get my first ever FAC to buy it that year...as it was a new thing for us all (Thats how long i have had it)

And I paid..........75$ for her

Just want you to make a PROFIT, Friend!

For handloading, stick with a powder very much on the fast end of things. A fast powder will tame the truly gawdawful fireballs and deafening reports. I learned that the hard way, with a Carcano Cavalry Carbine: full Frightfulness with factory ammo, a delightful pussycat when I stuffed it with 4198.

It is a Very Nice Toy.

Lol..this one is a keeper ;-)

First rifle i ever bought.
I ran some wipeout thru it last night...
then did it again and left it till i get home tonight.
there is not much for rifling at the end of her.
but thats ok as long as she still shoots.

I will keep the powder in mind , never reloaded for anything yet.
but i got some supplys this last spring .
lee loader , dies , tumbler..
lee reloading book.
its a start

Oh..my.. in the rifle pictured this ammo drops in the bore to the brass...
but in the one i have with the intact Mum..it only fits in about half way.

Both rifle bolts fit the rear of the brass nicely.

Dropping a round in the chamber with the bolt removed , they both seem the same .

Gonna cast this thing today to be sure.
but i think it simply has a bore like a sewer pipe at the muzzle
