Cleaning up tools after Devcon

I am going to use DevCon to bed my next rifle and am wondering what to use to clean up the tools afterward. I have previously used JB Weld and can simply use soap and water. Is it the same with DevCon (obviously BEFORE it dries) or would acetone (other?) be more advisable?

Thanks

Acetone doesn't really "cut" Devcon. I have a some leftover reducer used for mixing with 2 part epoxy auto paint that can also "reduce" Devcon or any other epoxy resin. Check out the auto store, you should be able to get a quart for 10-15 bucks.

I bed rifles with Devcon and find clean up should be done within the hour best before it sets up. Acetone works fine withQ tips to clean around the action. You have to be careful as to how much devcon you remove as you want a very fine line along the action, to be even.
Enjoy.

Rubbing alcohol works best for epoxies. It's the same stuff you use to thin the resin with slightly for some special applications. For cleaning the regular stuff is fine. Even the fairly cheap methyl hydrate stuff sold at the paint stores. For any thinning it should be the "dry" denatured alcohol.

For in the house alcohol will be a lot less nasty to smell than acetone.

What tools are getting Devcon on? I mix and apply with a popsicle stick and clean up squeeze-out with either popsicle stick or Q-tips soaked in WD40 or Jig-A-Lube and all over newspapers spread out on the workbench. Everything is disposable when I'm done.

I'm referring to cleaning the putty knife after mixing the Devcon for four minutes (as recommended).

Thanks very much for the feedback / advice.

Much appreciated to all

You are complicating the process way to much. Like Trinimon, I use the long wooden stir sticks available at the Dollar Store or Staples. Under $3 for a hundred. I mix up the Devcon or whichever bedding compound I'm using on a piece of stiff solid cardboard backing paper. After the job is finished, clean up is extremely easy. Toss it all into the garbage can.

Another great mixing cup for the bedding compound are those cheap plastic or waxed paper cups available at the Dollar Store or Staples. They can be picked up with volume marks on the sides and in very small containers to make mixing by volume very easy. Of course, they are also very cheap and therefore disposable.

Popsicle sticks from one of the craft stores is what I use. I bought a lifetime supply for $8 or so about 25 years ago. It looks like I might live long enough to need another box in a few more years.

bearhunter / Trinimon - You are right. I am complicating the process. Point well taken. I am going to follow your advice, much easier and simple.

Thanks to everyone for the input.

Thats how I do it too, I also trim the popsicle sticks on one end to help apply the epoxy as needed at different angles.

My Devcon just shipped from brownells after being on B.O for the last couple of months.... Cant wait to bed my first rifle.
