I just picked up a CZ Model 527 in 7.62x39 to play with. I like the light weight and carryability (if that's a real word). What type of game should I feel comfortable to hunt with Hornaday 123 gr SST or Winchester 123gr Power Point. I'm a decent marksman...Jim

i would be interested in knowing how this ammo would compare to some other small calibers typically used for deer. Thinking of 243 Win, maybe even 30-30 150 gr. Would think that Deer at moderate range, say under 150 yards. Someone will be along shortly with trajectory and energy numbers.

In a bolt action , the 7.62x39 would be capable of taking black bear, mule deer, whitetail deer no problem and smaller game within 200 yards. A moose would be pushing the limits on this cartridge, but if I bumped in to a moose within 100yards and that's i would have , I would take the shot , but shot placement would be very vital. I myself was thinking to get a zastava 85 due to how compact it is ,weight and mauser style action in a low recoil round.

Handloading the 7.62x39 with the Barnes 123gr TSX is the way to go in my opinion. Having witnessed the penetration and wound channel on several deer and black bear at ranges from 30-100yds, I would feel comfortable using it on even larger game like moose, as long as one is careful with shot placement and kept the range close.

A 125gr bullet at 2300fps is at the low end of the energy charts for hunting but within range it will work for deer. The CZ 527 that I have will punch 5 shots through a dime at 100 yards with factory PRVI ammunition. No reason to reload for this rifle.
I have several reasons I reload for my CZ 527 .......cheaper...cast ..... better bullet selection...........don't need to rely on factory ........ I will never run out of ammo as I hoard.Two deer shot this year broadside through + through so can't fault a 123gr SP Hornady handload. As well I load 150gr Sierra .311's for larger stuff............Harold
I have my dies and components to load whenever I want, but the PVRI was such a good deal when I picked up 50 boxes at 12 bucks/box. The brass is really good to load and work with, which was also the large part of buying the factory loads.
Thanks everyone for the positive replies and comments. This fall when I hunt, I'll feel a little better carrying my CZ527, knowing I'm not the only one out there that feels the same way I do. Bullet placement is everything, and a little help from velocity, and bullet weight will help bring down what ever I come up against, except grizzly, of course. Thanks again...Jim
+1 on the Privi brass .........if you can get it for $12 a box loaded all the more power to you.I scooped 500 Privi brass and 1000 123 Privi SP bulk bullets along with several cases of Ukraine non-corrosive. Great little deer round in the woods at least as I haven't gotten a chance to stretch her out beyond that on game yet. Have some heavy 200gr whisper loads data...will work on a "chicken" load with a cast Tokarev bullet or .32 /90gr Hornady sized .310 and Unique....Harold

Hornady SST, and the White Tail I got fell into its own shadow, tail flicked twice, and that was it.

Remington 799 (Zastava) once-fired PRVI brass loaded with 150gn Interlocks. 29.2gn WC735. 2150fps. Shoots into 1.3" all day.
I haven't used it yet, but the brass came from PRVI commercial 123gn loads, and THEY performed perfectly! 3 does and a buck. None of them went more than 25yds and ranges were between 30 and 130 yds. All were pass-through except the buck and that bullet stopped against the hide on the far side.
