I've read and heard that a bunch of the cheap commie surplus we had, regardless of where it was made, was warehoused and shipped from Ukraine. With the conflict and unrest in that region we've had a lot of the supply cut off. They aren't necessarily redirecting it to the front lines but who wants to go through a warzone to package and ship an order to Canada? That's why we've had prices increases and lower stock on a lot of surplus. I have no idea how true this is, so take it with a bucket of salt, but it's one rumour I've heard repeated a lot.
There is, of course, also the fact that surplus ammo isn't an unlimited supply. Almost all countries have switched from the cheap surplus calibers we shoot (7.62x25, 7.62x39, 7.62x54R) for their mainstay weapons. They of course still produce some new ammo for the weapons they keep around and still use but they aren't producing billions of rounds anymore. Most of the surplus we are shooting was stockpiles the USSR built up for a protracted war against the US and Western Europe. They were stockpiling for a decade long war with millions and millions of soldiers that never happened. They are producing a tiny fraction of what they once did so there isn't much to go to the surplus market. I've read multiple people here on CGN saying surplus ammo is an unlimited supply that will last many lifetimes.
I doubt any of it has to do with some new Norc pistol. That might eat up some of the ammo in Canada but doesn't effect worldwide stockpiles.
