I was wondering what its like to own a handgun.... if you belong to a club where you can use it, is there a lot to it? Filling out the paper work getting the ATT, is all the stuff surrounding the ownership is it more of a pain or really no different then just owning a rifle.

Just a question?

Take the course, write the exam, send off paperwork then wait for what seems like forever then one day an RPAL shows up in your mail.
Join a club/range and apply for a LTATT then go buy your handgun.
A bit of bother but well worth it if you want to shoot restricted's.

Only you can decide if owning a handgun is worth it for you. Handguns open up a whole new aspect of shooting, sight picture, trigger control and enjoyment. Also allows you to participate in handgun disciplines like IPSC, IDPA, 3 gun etc.
If you live hours away or have zero access to an approved range, I can see your objection. But otherwise, I would recommend trying it. I started out only with handguns and only within the last year got into long guns. I have no regrets.

Obviously more paper work, and an ungraded PAL. Nothing the average folk can't handle. It would be nice of course if didn't need to be done. I have had them for 40 yrs. with no issue. I could see it being an issue only if you made it one.

I have my RPAL, and live in Ab. However just about every range within an hour drive is always packed on the weekend (only time I can go shooting) and you have to book a time and be done at a certain time because someone else is booked behind you, also I can't stand the attitude of a number of a certain type of 'RO" and too boot...most of these ranges charge an arm and a leg and have so many restrictions that it's just no fun. I bought a cheap ($40/yr) family membership at a range that's 6 hours away just to make the CFO happy when I wanted to buy an old used AR (one I have never ended up shooting!)

I have way more fun driving a half an hour out to the bush where I have a place where I have set up out to 800m. No one bugs me, I'm in no rush, and there's no membership fees!

There's my 2 cents.....yes our laws make owning/shoot restricted's a pain in the a$$.

Sure.... right, the wife would kick my butt if I said "lets move west just so I can shoot" well once she stopped laughing she would kick my butt ;)

Worth a try! Tell her she can buy a whole new wardrobe in trade.
I hear Ontario ranges are full, have wait lists and have all kinds of range rules and probation shoots before allowing you to join. That's assuming you actually live close to one.
But seriously, handguns are fun. Like most have said, a pain initially but worth it when you have one in your hand. Kinda like holding your first born.:d

Both of my handguns were purchased on a Saturday, firearms were transferred and my ATT's were in hand by noon the next Monday via the SK CFO.

I've had a relatively easy time with the CFO compared to others.

A breeze if you own shootable aniques. Lots of fun actually, especially if you have a huge piece of land that would cause the queen's comboys to leave their air conditioned car on a hot day and walk 30 minutes through trailess woods to the sound of firing.
