Owning a Handgun..... pain in @ss or not

If you are in a hurry to get the gun, then it's a PITA because there are a number of steps that take time. But it's all do-able.

But if you are not in a hurry, and have a club where you can shoot restricteds.... no problem. The main factor that will slow you down is the local "club safety" shoot or assessment, and ironically, this is something Ontario's clubs imposed on themselves (with encouragement from the CFO, of course).

If you shoot regularly, get a handgun - they are a bucketload more fun than rifles or shotguns, especially if you take up IPSC or something similar. Shooting at a paper target gets old pretty fast, but action shooting doesn't (at least not yet, after 5 years). So, there is an increased cost - more gas, more trips to the range, and more ammo - because you are having so much damn fun. Of course, you do have to maintain the club membership, so that adds to the cost.

Nope its not a pain. I'd rather do with out the wasteful paper work , but my CFO is pretty quick. Buy a set of 4 pad locks with the same key and combo gun locks. Keep your ATTs and reg slips in a zip up binder so its easy to get to the range with all your paper work. Forgetting or looking for keys is the worst pain I've encountered beside not being able to take detours to do other things but I find owning handguns enjoyable.

Have fun and play safe :)

I sold all my hand guns (modern variety) and purchased a pre 1895 colt revolver with appropriate certification letter from the RCMP- result is, an antique is not considered a firearm- I do not need any paperwork to carry it to my local range or anywhere I can legally use it for target practice. Hope that helps. PS- it groups "minute of watermelon" at 25 meters-lol

exercise your R status my friend the more people that do the better, keep them filling out paperwork remember the pita it is for you it also is for them with att's and registration. the sooner you buy one the sooner you will be enjoying it.

I don't think the paper work is such a pain. And once it is done, shooting handguns is such a different and rewarding target experience.

Restricted are more fun and the fact that "THEY" don't want you to have them makes me enjoy it even more. CFO tried screwing me around once with a couple transfers , so I wrote them a letter reminding them that not processing my paperwork or not giving me a refusal to process in writing was punishable by up to 2 years in prison. They are real quick with all my paperwork now...
Just get your RPAL and grow our numbers!

Got mine one year ago and i have no regret. Just be patient and one day you will realize that you have your first handgun. Thats magic hehe

What a great feeling to shoot with these little beast. 22lr is low cost and 3x more fun to shoot than with a rifle... Imagine 9mm or 45 acp

Dont wait more and take it!

I just started buying handguns ,and to tell the truth ,I found the entire process somewhat quick and painless. The woman at the Manitoba CFO office was quite nice and very helpful.

I`m just sorry I had an RPAL all this time and never took advantage of it ,so now I need to play "catch up" and buy as many as I can and or afford.

Go for it, you will not regret it !!!!

The waiting has been more stressful than anything else...love my long guns, but shoot my pistols more.....dive in and enjoy....

I was wondering what its like to own a handgun.... if you belong to a club where you can use it, is there a lot to it? Filling out the paper work getting the ATT, is all the stuff surrounding the ownership is it more of a pain or really no different then just owning a rifle.

Just a question?

Less of a pita than a drivers license, car registration e-test, insurance etc... cheaper and more fun.

Yeah, it's a PITA. The restrictive ATT's make going to the range a lot more difficult. If I drive my son to a ski resort or skateboard park, I wouldn't mind going to the range on the way back, but nooooooh, can't do that. What a crock of poop!

Then there's the issue of maligned RPAL and ATT expiry dates. There's no common sense in the restrictions whatsoever, except to burden or attempt to ensnare the unwary gun owner.

In BC, Ive walked into a store early in the morning bought a handgun, and came back that same afternoon with my transfer and statt papers to pick it up and bring it home on the same day!
Thats faster than in the USA boys and girls!

Saying all the hassle is a PITA is the same as saying I find driving to be a hassle because I have to stop at all the red lights!
