Hey guys,

My buddies and i have been using older mosberg bolt action shotguns to shoot skeet. We use report pairs to give us enough time to rack the next shot in. The mosbergs work well but we have been looking at some of the newer bolt actions but all seem to be rifled barrels. Ive heard that shooting bird shot out of a rifled barrel will make the pattern ineffective. We would like to see if we can either find different barrels for the newer bolt actions or if its possible to machine the rifling out of them and ideally have screw in choked.

If anyone has any suggestions or any information on a newer style bolt action, it would be much appreciated.

Seriously? (I'm saying this next part in a very light-hearted, humorous manner, so don't get offended.)

When you typed in your question, did it sound as dumb to you as it does to us?

Been around a skeet field many years and have to say I cannot ever remember seeing a bolt action being used
You sure are not looking to run the hundred that is for sure
Also forget about bird shot in a rifled barrel if you are looking for any type of pattern
I get enough funny looks still using a pump :)

Lmfao!!!

To the OP...unless you have a pretty decent disposable income...save your time and money by getting something a little better suited for the task!

Boys, no one is winning the brand new car at the end. We use bolt action guns, pump, semis, even shot it with the small barrel "backpacker norinco ", even lever action shotguns for skeet. We have fun at our range. Using short barrels and all types of different guns.

To each their own
But seriously just wasting ammo shooting lead shot in a rifled barrel that is for sure
It puts too much spin to do any good unless you are shooting donuts

I have fun too, always have especially trying to run 100 with a 410 pump
Want a challenge give the 410 a try
Cheers

The newer bolt guns are designed for slug shooting. The cost to properly remove the rifling would be way above the price of a new bolt gun. The stock shape is also not designed for low gun shooting.
It would be easier to modify your older mossbergs or to find an old geha bolt action. They can be polished up. Still not as fun as a dual pistol gripped pump but fun just the same. Once I get some time ill bring out a new head turner

My .410 Wingmaster is one of my favourite skeet guns! Super fun.

To the OP, nobody makes a "bird-specific" bolt action gun, because they were not a successful design in the first place. Pumps, semis and double guns are much better suited.

I hear you my friend. Started out with the 4 gun wingmaster set in the 60's and made the entire circle to the semi's, 4 barrel sets then finished with tubes
Some glad I held onto the old wingmasters and didnot sell them. I normally use the 28ga but when I think I am real good take the old 410 out and realize I am not real quick ;)
Cheers

We have fun at our range is the best reason to do anything.
Bolt action shotgun barrels are installed just like a rifle barrel. They're not interchangeable. Think big bore rifles.
As mentioned, shot out of rifled barrels fly's in a spiral sending the shot string all over creation and leaving big holes in the pattern.
There are screw on chokes available for smooth bores though, but I don't think you'll find screw in chokes without having the barrel machined for 'em. Removing the rifling will cost a fortune. Think in terms of over $100 per hour.
A dual pistol gripped pump is twice as useless as a single pistol grip only. Fun if you're in a phone booth riot though.

If you want a repeater, get a pump. Plenty of cheap options out there. Personally I have a maverick 88, and it has worked flawlessly.

Rifled barrel shotguns are for slugs only. The centrifugal force that would stabilize a bullet causes the shot to spread much faster than a smooth bore.

The reason you are only finding rifled bolt action models is the bolt actions are basically a rifle for shotgun only areas.

Guys, I have shot skeet almost every weekend for 3 year. I get around 20 on average. I don't need 25 to make myself feel better. Ive got a double pistol grip mosberg 400 thay I use and get between 10-15. It's a hoot. To all those posters saying to get the right gun for the job. Reminds me of that saying, it's not about the destination it's how you get there. Might not have the proper wording but you get the idea. Happy shooting everyone.

I used to shoot skeet at a 50 year old club until the CFO determined that our shot-fall areas didn't meet standards. Our options were either close down or modify our game, so this is what we came up with:

RULES FOR MODIFIED SKEET:

NO SHOOTING FROM STATIONS 5, 6 & 7.
Five shots are fired from each station, as follows:

STATION 1
- High House Single
- Low House Single
- Double
- Shooter’s Choice Single (High or Low House)

STATION 2
- High House Single
- Low House Single
- Double
- Shooter’s Choice Single (High or Low House)

STATION 3
- High House Report Pair
- Low House Report Pair
- Shooter’s Choice Single (High or Low House)

STATION 4
- High House Report Pair
- Low House Report Pair
- Shooter’s Choice Single (High or Low House)

STATION 8 (SHOOTER MUST FACE LOW HOUSE)
- Double
- Double
- Shooter’s Choice Single (High or Low House)

It was a hoot and no one kept score other than in their own head. It certainly brought out some new shooters, as well as a variety of guns. Never saw any bolt actions, but if we did I'm sure the squad would have been fine with letting the guy substitute doubles with report pairs.

You've never seen me use a dual pistol gripped gun. I average 21-22 with it before I sold it
There are guys I shoot with that use bolt guns very well if given report pairs

Skeet to some is solely for fun. My local club allows any legal shotgun to be used with out discrimination. We are a passionate group of shooters who love our guns whether it's a Stevens 311 or a Holland and Holland royal or a pistol gripped mossberg or a norinco lever gun. All these guns mentioned have been shot on th same round of skeet together.
We have our serious shooters that shoot along side us and we all have a good time.
I encourage new shooters to come out and try no matter what gun they bring so long as they are safe and legal
