So I got one of those .75 caliber Brown Bess reproductions about a year ago.

^ this. My understanding was that proofing was twice the powder charge at a minimum. The barrel should handle it, the stock, you're guess.
There is so much info on the net about any subject you can think of and a whole lot of it is just plain wrong. We have to verify, verify, and verify. especially if it is information that can get U killed or injured if it is wrong.

fortunately no one posted loads from "The Onion" ;)

I'll probably get in touch with the guy who set it up for me [I was having issues with the lock] - he did test fire it, so I can get the loads he used & find out if he proofed it [doubtful - it was a functionality test]

If not there is an area at our range where I can safely proof it :)

Maybe you guys can help out with something else?

I really want a BP percussion pistol ~ but double barreled AND in kit form! :)

Traditions has a few, but nothing I see is DB'd

Who are the manufacturers of quality kits?

In Canada?

Anyone have experience with these, pros? cons?

Yes - I have come across that one. [the only one in fact]

looking for something in .44 Octagonal barrels would be nice [no shot allowed at my range, slugs only :( ]

Could you use a slug/ball in something like that?

you could load ball in it no problem. you never really see octagonal barrel in a double because its hard to regulate them

I know you changed questions to the pistol, but I have the lyman black powder manual loading for the .75 cal smooth bore with a 42 inch barrel.Round ball projectile with a diameter of .715, weighing 545 grains. Using Goex powder FFg granulation, along with .020 thick patch with a lube of Crisco and 120 grain load produced, a muzzle velocity of 1088fps, muzzle energy of 1433 ft/lbs... both numbers at 100 yards are, muzzle velocity of 889 fps, muzzle energy of 956 ft/lbs..this is the maximum load listed in the manual..Send me a e mail if you need some data on lesser charges..Oh if you get bored with it after the pistol purchase..let me know I give you a couple bucks for it as long as you pay the shipping ;)

OK - Wow!

Finally got this out to shoot, what a frikkin hoot - don't think I've ever had this much fun shooting!

sent about 30 rounds downrange and got a group of about 3 feet :)

used loads of 100 and 120G FFg only had issues 3 times out of the 30 - of course both times I let someone else shoot and the one time we decided to take video!

That bullet puller definitely came in handy though - surprisingly effective!! My big problem was that the balls were too large to patch I would up using the patches as wads and seating the ball on top of that - no problem, will just get some smaller balls next time! The little jar of patches there froze stiff as a board anyway :)

That "little" group there is a result of aiming about a foot above the number one... :)

We just ran a Brown Bess lecture at the Burlington Rifle & Revolver Club.

There where more than a few rare birds on the table.

Enjoy your Bess!

Big bore military flintlocks are just a load of fun to shoot, I fired one once and that was it, I was hooked. Great pics, thanks for uploading!

I forgot to upload and post a video of my india made 1777 charleville. Here is my taking it out for the first time. Gun is from Loyalist arms.

The group on that board was not from the range in this video, it was out around 35 yards. I had moved the board up closer with the intention to try out some buck and bird shot patterns.
