Hi again

My question to my fellow Red Rifle CGN's is which STV 40 should I buy ?

A Tula Arsenal or Izhevsk Arsenal , or does it matter ?

6 port or 4 port ...

Mar has both right now ...

You know these red rifles are addictive ,,, I have 2 SkS's also ..... is it hot in here or is it just me lol ..
 
Are you looking for a collector rifle or one you plan on shooting? If it's a shooter I'd be looking for one with railed receiver that will accept a scope mount as well as a rifle with the best condition bore/chamber and stock you can find. I like the look of the early 6 port muzzle brake but that's just me.

Others can tell you more about what to look for in a collector piece.
 
Doesn't matter. Chances are you might even find a Tula/Izhevsk bastard rifle.

12 port looks better. 4 port is easier to clean. 12 port does the job better in taming the recoil. 12 port is louder.

Tula/ Izhevsk doesnt matter, but their is a huge range in fit and finish. You''ll be happiest with something that has a good trigger, tight forestock, smooth action. Of course all of those things can be "tuned" with a bit of minor smithing.
 
Or email Martin at Corwin arms, he doesn't have any listed on his website but he just might sell you one out of his private stock. That's how I got my last one and it's in beautiful shape.
 
get a 12 port, Giving a exact year is kind of hard to do.
I never liked the thicker stocks , And the 12 port handles recoil better.

I think the biggest thing to check is the rifling/bore.
If it looks messy its probably corrosion so don't be fooled into thinking its just cosmoline these guns are notorious for corrosion in the bore due to corrosive ammo.
Bring a maglite to check it.

Other than that they are mostly all the same.
 
Izzy rifles are less common.

Late years 1944-45 are the least common.

Podolsk/Kovrov rifles are always good and less common than Izzy rifles.

Early 1940 and 1941 rifles are not easy to find, but I wouldn't say scarce.

The side rails are always nice, but slab walls are an interesting variant.
 
When i went looking, I wanted an early model as I love the 12 port muzzle brake. With that said, I don't like cobbled together rifles, so my task was to find one with all the correct era pieces. I ended up with a very nice 1940 Izzy with the correct brake, slotted receiver, trigger guard, top handguard, rear sight, stock and so on.....and this was from Lever Arms. Very, very happy with my old Russkie!
 
all the SVT's ive looked at were 1941's (like 10 dif rifles).
But they are not all the exact same either so watch.
Some come with 4 port break and thicker stock , the stock is thicker and perhaps stronger but it feels a lot more unwieldy to me than the normal stock i have average sized hands and thats how it felt to me.
Some are also mixed with a wash of different parts.
but like i said before make sure the bore is nice first and formost because alot are messed up even though they look good on the outside.

You could always buy two .
One with a great bore and junky stock and one with a great stock and junky bore lol.
Merge the best of the two and keep the other as parts gun.

assuming you cant find one with both a good stock and bore.

That's what I have. I have one with a really junk stock but a mint bore and the other is a beautiful stock but a nasty bore. However, it shoots just as well as the one with a nice bore so I may as well not strip it of the only nice thing going for it.
