34mm Spuhr or NEAR scope mount for S&B scope on 50bmg??

Which mount would you use for a S&B Scope on a 50bmg? I've read about both and cannot decide. The NEAR is CDN which I like. Anyone wth either of these mounts?

I have both the NEAR Alphamount and the Spuhr Unimount, and they are both good. I have a preference for Spuhr. I like its design better and it feels/looks more robust.
 
As nice as Richard Near's stuff is I would go with a Spuhr. They have more surface area in contact with the scope tube and greater clamping force distributed along the Pic Rail. Certainly something to consider for a .50.
 
Spuhr rings have "grooves" and they recommend that you use some "rosin" powder when you mount the scope. The rosin keeps the scope from moving in the rings, that may be a benefit on the 50 cal?. You can get it at Brownells, or a local gunsmith.
 
Thanks guys. Any idea what height mount I would need for a Schmidt & Bender PMII 5-25x56 as it would be mounted on my PGW 50bmg which has a picatinny top rail? Also any dealers in Canada?

I ran 1" ring height on my Premier 5X25X56 IIRC, so I think you should be OK? IIRC as well that I had not a lot of room for the scope cap, it still worked?
Get the Spuhr scope leveling tool if you think your going to have enough room under the scope when mounted to the base?
 
hawk-I I won't be whale hunting until summer bud. Meanwhile I've been given 5 tags for umingmak/muskox and would like to shoot one from a long distance so gonna scope the rifle for winter hunting.

mildot thanks I'll contact ceriksson. As for height I wouldn't know which to get but would think their highest would clear the front of the scope??!!

I like to mount my scopes as close to the bore as possible, try a post on Sniper's Hide, lots of "end users" over there, and the Spuhr rep answers questions in the thread from time to time.Good Luck. BTW rings might work better depending on the rail/base length? and how big the turrets are on the S&B.
 
You will need mimimum 1.34" mount height to clear your full length rail. Go onto Mile High's website and view their fitment guide for AI AX's.

The one piece mount IMO is for an AR type rifle, unless you get it for a specific rifle like the AI etc. The rings give you more flexibility with mounting distances on the rail with respect to the turrets. Spuhr rings are solid, so I don't think there would be any issues with rigidity of the set up.
 







First of 3 Near mounts, I am switching over all my long range rigs to their Alpha Mounts. Richard provides a quality product and ships quickly.
