I'm truly surprised the 300 RUM didn't score a little higher in the poll. I think it's a very versatile round, especially so if you roll your own.

I guess this makes me a 1%er.:d

^^Truth there. Power it down to 30-06 or 300 Wm levels. Since picking the "Ultimate" already amounts to a popularity contest, what people have shot, what animals they already have shot and will consider encountering....1% sounds about right. The 300 Rum certainly ups the ability and versatility of the 308 bore......BUT.....still not enough for the top few of the the NA29.

I'm not real convinced of that. I shot a water buffalo with a .300 RUM. They (the buffalo) are plenty big enough, and even a 180 Accubond rattles their cage pretty hard and stiffer bullets are readily available. If a hunter took a notion he could load 240 grain Woodleighs if he was a heavy bullet guy, or thought he needed it. 'Course, the same bullet could be used in the other .308 bores albeit at a lower velocity.

Vanessa shot a water buffalo in Argentina with a 7RM and got about four feet of penetration and the buff died. It will absolutely do it and with the docile Argentinian buff I wasn't concerned at all. With a cape buff....my concern level would increase!

Yet I have read on another forum about a couple cape buffalo's were shot with a 8x64 Brenneke, (which is a 30-06 level caliber) successfully. Im not saying that would be my first choice of cal, but It can be done.
Check out post #14.

If I was stuck with one gun it would be a 30-06 or a .338 Win Mag.
And heavy on the .338.
185s at 3100fps or 250's at 2750fps. All with great BC's and reasonable recoil.
What's not to like?
I need to build another one......
