Ok , first off thanks for all the great info on my Mosin Nagant 91/30 1925 .

Well I redid the stock today ,,, Orange based stripper , No Sanding , no scraping , just lots of rubbing with an old beach towel so all the cartouches are still there and a few new ones that were hidden in the varnish .

The stock was not down to the bare wood as sanding would do , so some faint original colour remained in the wood . Two coats of Min Wax Red mahogany was applied , a few coats of Tru Oil , hand rubbed , just enough to add a level of protection and a soft satin finish .

yes , perhaps I should not have redone it but what's done is done .

Looks very nice. I have a 1934 matching number with hex receiver. Had the factory refurb shellacked stock, which I just didn't like. Stripped it down to bare wood with Circa 1850 stripper, no sanding, then added three coats of Red Oak stain and about 6 coats (so far) of raw linseed oil. It turned out well. I don't feel at all bad about doing the finish as it wasn't the "original" wood but a refurb stock, and it's my rifle LOL. Enjoy it.

Cheers

The Question as a new person to buying a Mosin Nagant 91/30 , If during the referbs all the cartouches were removed leaving No markings on the stock what so ever , How can a person tell if the stock is Not the original , if it Looks and fits correctly?

Yes , the metal stamps are more difficult to remove but I am sure there could be those who would or could remove most for these , if not all , So again How is a person to Really Know if a rifle is 100 % original and unreferbed ?

As all things old and collectable it can be often difficult to be 100 % certain of the true quality of an item , this is compounded as apparently there are No Official Records to refer back to see how many times a Mosin Nagant 91/30 was set back for a referb , when and where , when it was reissued , ect .

I guess all have to live and learn and I thank everyone for great information about the Mosin Nagant 91/30 !!

As with anything , with enough effort , numbers can be changed . But yours , like the two I bought at CT , have Hex receivers.....and that is what may make ithem semi collectable some day . The higher priced Mosin 91/30s in the collectable section at Westrifle are pretty much all Hex Receivers......they are a little more difficult to come by , and are often better machined than the round receiver war years Mosins that were being produced at a high rate of speed during the war.

"Collectible" varies greatly depending on the firearm & the purchaser. Just cause its a refurb doesn't mean it can't be considered collectible. If a mosin collector is only interested in non refurbs , he had better be prepared to have a very small collection.

I guess the most likely place to find factory issued Mosin 's would be in the USA as when Remington's and Westinghouse's contracts were canceled due to the Russian October revolution . The US government bailed out these two companies by buying about 600,000 of these rifles thus reducing the companies losses . The US Gov used apox 280,000 of these rifles to train US troops at home for WWI . The last of the Unissued M91 's were sold off to NRA members through the Director of Civilian Marksmanship for less than $ 3.50 each . Finding one these that was purchased through this NRA membership program that was unfired by the original owner and still in that condition would be a one in a million find indeed .

So much History to these rifles and their longevity in combat use , is remarkable , even the Vietcong used them as sniper rifles ......

i refinished mine and i think it looks amazing, like 6 coats of minwax golden oak glossy urethane/stain combo, mine is shooter grade and the parts are mismatched, the bolt matches the bayo and the floorplate is lined through forced and the buttplate matches the barrel, go fig. one of the barrel bands is izzy stamped, the other has a tula star on it. I wish that rifle could talk. dont feel bad, she looks good. i cold blue'd my bolt to so its black now, gives it a neat look. Do what you want within the legal means and enjoy her :)
