I didn't know off hand but asked your question on the Smith & Wesson forum. The consensus from the experts is that it means the gun shipped with a blued finish.
 
Purists would be aghast but I'd be tempted to have a new .45 ACP cylinder fitted to it.

Many of these guns were converted to .45acp post WWI. That's one of the things you should be very sure to check before attempting to fire a .455 cartridge in one of these. Most had the cartridge markings stamped over but not always.

Are you sure that "B" is not a stylized Crown?

Just looked at mine [serial number is 69,2xx - has the same B in the same spot - it is definitely a B - I would guess it is maybe an assembler's mark or in production proof of some kind - not part of the actual serial number]. Would it would be too coincidental if the "B" meant "barrel"?

Mine also has the serial number in the three places - inside barrel flat, on the frame butt, and also the cylinder face. It also has another number 34,xx on the side of the frame when you open the crane to lift the cylinder out. Mine also has a small stylized Crown over the number 30 stamped on the butt. It is on one side, with the lanyard loop in the middle, and the serial number on the other side of the butt. I believe the Crown over 30 is a military inspector's mark. It also has the Canadian "C broad arrow" on the left side of the frame up near where the web of your hand would hold the grip. Mine also has an inscription on the right side of the barrel "Lieut. H.F. Beattie - 29th Canadians".
