Ruger #1 & Stock Cracking...

My first rifle given to me by my Dad was a .270 #1... From 13 to about 22-23yrs old I used it exclusively until the siren call of a repeater was too much and I foolishly traded it in.
The one thing I do remember is that the stock cracked directly behind the shotgun style tang safety piece!?! I really want to send a PM on a .375 H&H unit, but the thought that the stock cracked behind a mild .270 is really picking at my brain....
Was mine just a one off or is this a occasional / common?? deal with these rifles? All feedback is appreciated, I would like to pay homage to my first big game gun, just in a more fun caliber!!

Thanks,
D.K.

Same thing happened to a friends Guide Gun he brought me to fix.
The stock was loose as hell.
Let fly with some fairly heavy recoiling HSM "Bear Load" ammo and split the butt stock.
You don't have to be a gunsmith to check your guns screws and select an appropriate screw driver and snug them up when required.
Some people are scared to put a tool in their hands.

It's more of a one off item, ....bet you never thought to tighten the stock bolt in all that time. I have a truckload of #1 and #3's without a tang crack!

28+ years ago, beer and girls had most of my attention. Completely makes sense, always had great accuracy so I assumed nothing was loose, like I said a very long time ago.... Thanks for helping me affirm my purchase!!

My #1 in .416 Rigby split though he tang, and two stocks later, I got fed up and sent it to a gunsmith who said the problem was uneven bedding of the buttstock, at which point the problem was quickly resolved.

My 458 WM #1H hasn't split. I guess any stock can split, but the 375 isn't particularly obstinate so it shouldn't be an issue. Besides, if it splits that's just an excuse to restock with some really nice wood.

Any two piece stock can crack... it is the nature of the way the wrist is designed and forces of the uni-directional anchor bolt are applied... and into this thin wrist area, the inletting for the receiver and /or tang have to be perfectly fitted. As others have said, the tension of the anchor bolt is critical.... it can't be loose, it also can't be torqued down too tight. I have had dozens of No.1's and only one with a tang crack.

Buy the gun and don't worry about the stock cracking... I don't believe it will, but if it does, it is an easy fix.

I've had quite a few myself, never saw a cracked one, I had two in 45/70 and a number 3 in 4570 and used to hot rod the ammo pretty good for them as well.
I think Hoytcanon is right , the stock design is far better than a Savage 99 for instance, but if it does crack, re-bed it , glue it and fogeddaboudit!

Is this not a common problem on Savage 99's that don't have the area around the tang properly fitted? This or a loose stock and I can see it happening, but not an overly common problem with the Rugers AFAIK....

Have a Remington model 700 in 416 Rem Mag that I chopped to a 20" bbl.
It split its wooden stock at the tang before I had shot my first box of ammo thru it and I subsequently routed out the barrel channel and fitted a Ramline synthetic stock to it.
Never had a problem since and it's very accurate.
Kicks like a Clydesdale work horse.
