I'm new to shotguns and looking to buy a 12g. I'm looking to do sport shooting and some hunting. whats the best way to go i have seen some interchangeable barrels and don't know if its a good idea? any suggestions for make and models would help. Thanx :d

What do you want to spend?

If you are on a budget there is a Mossberg Pump (model 535) 3 barrel combo 3 1/2" super mag chamber - 28" Vented Rib, 24" Turkey barrel/turkey choked with fiber sights and a 24" full rifled cantilevered (for scope mount) deer barrel.

Package can be had for about $600 (give or take if you shop around).

It's all camo which looks kinda cool.

Decent set up for "starting out"

Whatever you decide, make your move NOW.

I'm just looking at the new wholesale prices which have gone up a lot (dollar is getting whacked and everything comes from "outside" Canada).

The wholesale price on an 870 Rem combo (870 Express with 26 or 28" VR and a 20" rifle sights) is already ABOVE your stated price range.

A two barrel Mossberg (mod 500) might be one of your few options unless you can find someone with "old stock".

Unless you are considering "used" your choices in that price range are rapidly shrinking.

Take a $500 set at todays price will be $625 with the price being indexed to the dollar as new stock hits the shelves. Buy the Best set you can now will be money in pocket down the road.

If you want to learn skeet, a semi auto is a huge advantage over a pump action. If you can increase your budget a bit, there is a used Winchester SX-3 on the EE for $700. They are a very reliable gun, and the felt recoil is much less than with a pump action, for shooting several rounds of skeet, or for shooting heavy waterfowl loads.

Agree 100% the very best buy your going to find in a quality firearm .

I would say a Rem 870 express. Its been around for years. I would agree if you want to try skeet get a semi. Bass Pro has the Beretta A300 for 800 bucks.

A cheaper semi auto would be great , the pumps on the market theese days often come with two barrels , and with the selection of chokes n the maarlet these days form slugs as well as steel, they can be a great buy as well, but for most people, a semi auto is perfect as far as recoil and they are easy to strip down and clean.
The chokes you can get will serve you well for clays, waterfowl, upland birds and deer as well.

I'm a confirmed SXS hammer double fanatic, but to reccomend something like that for a newer shooter would be just bad!!
Most people have issues with the wider sighting plane, and then to add the hammers and black powder into the mix is a recipe for a gun on the exchange for sale pretty quick!!LOL!
Get a semi as Stubblejumper suggested if you can and all will be good as a new shooter. :>)

There's absolutely nothing wrong with a pump action for skeet...or anything else for that matter! Pratice is the name of the game. The more you pratice the more birds you'll put in the bag and the "pumping" of the action will become a reflex! You can easily find a used Remington 870 Wingmaster with a fixed choke that is in your budget. If it's a full choke get a gunsmith to ream it out to Light Modified constriction and never look back! The same can be said for an Ithaca Model 37 or 87. If you look on the EE right now there's even a couple of Browning BPS Hunter shotguns with choke tubes that are at or near your price range.

Buy a old Winchester model 12 for 299. take it to a gunsmith and have the action cleaned and stoned for 100. Perhaps have him put a full vent rib and a poly choke 2 on it for another 200.

I guarantee you will get more use out of it without jamming than anything else in the price range.

Never underestimate an old guy at the skeet field with a model 12...

Of all places to check, Canadian Tire is a good place to look for "old stock" Mossberg 500 field/deer combos.
stores near me still have plenty of them. And its where I got my 535 Camo field/deer combo For <600 tax-in.
I just notice they dont really have the 3 barrel combos.
