So I'm inheriting a Colt Heavey barrel Match shorter... the receiver is marked .223 but would appreciate any info on if it is safe to use 5.56 in these rifles..... i am unsure if the 223 marking is due to being a ban gun as most colt civy models still use mil spec/grade parts.

Stick with .223... The chamber is cut for .223, and 5.56 is slightly different, dimensionally, and higher power. Can almost guarantee that nothing will happen, but why take the chance?

The Colt AR chamber will certainly not be cut to SAAMI .223

It will undoubtedly be cut to handle 5.56x45mm NATO

This. Some companies will mark their barrels or receivers .223 Rem for export but the chamber will be a 5.56x45mm one. I've seen this on a few different firearms, your best course of action of everything else fails is to email the manufacturer and ask. I know a lot of rifles from the USA from a few years ago were marked .223 Rem for export to circumvent "assault weapon" calibers or something but it apparently eased up over the years.

I have a Colt H-Bar sporter and it is stamped 5.56 on the barrel and .223 on the lower.... my father shot nothing but .223 out of it and 500 rnds later it is still fine. Does anyone know what the current price for a gun like this is ??
