Urban Tactical Match

The Gunslingers would like to extend a congratulations to the Top 5 place holders at Saturday's competition. Our hats go off to all the competitors who came out to shoot and support the event. You all made it a great day!

Thank you for your suggestions and please know they're being taken into consideration for the next challenge. We look forward to seeing you all back again.

Please note: 25mm is correct. No Gunslinger participated in the event, nor did anyone who was involved in the planning, design, set up or delivery.

Any chance of seeing a pic or vid of the event?
May help some of the fence sitters make up their mind on attending future events.

Thanks for posting these up and the scoring correction, in addition to throwing a fun match. Just wanted to clarify something about the handovers... I see them as a reasonable safety compromise for an event that allows both holster-certified and new action shooters to play. My first 3gun match, I DQ'd myself for leaving a shell in the shotgun and I've had a few matches of other kinds under my belt. This just makes sure everybody plays safely even if it introduces some uncertainty to the times.

Just got home (went to see American Sniper). Video is rendering now.

Would have liked to meet you TRaTSeRiF. I was in the 2pm group (didn't shoot until just before 3pm). Maybe we saw eachother? I was the old chubby dude, grey beard, was sporting my black "ultra-tacti-COOL" vest, and 5.11 ball cap.

So... I ended up in 13th place out of 47 shooters. Not super happy with that, screwed up mag changes (too slow), and had 2 missed targets the first stage which cost me +10 seconds (5 seconds each).

I called Dave at the range on Monday, and found out the course was still setup. So I went in and did all 3 stages again, with Dave from UT timing me. BUT, this time I was holstered (tangent: I found out that some people were permitted to holster... I should have asked, as I'm "qualified"). Anyhow, did much better 2nd time through with a time of 66.47 including 2 missed shots again (compared to my 80.39 on Saturday). Not sure if my better time was because I was holstered (no need to grab the gun from the table), or because it was my second time through. I'm guessing it was more because it was my 2nd run and I was a little less "nervous".

All in all, it was VERY fun! It was my first match/competition, even though I've been shooting for over 22 years. I want to do more! :)

Scott

Thanks OK! Looking forward to seeing it. Should have remembered to bring mine :(

Nice vid OK!!! I would have liked to have met you too, but I doubt you stuck around for the 5PM squad.. No fancy tactical gear, just a 2" duty belt (my AR mag pouches like it better than an IPSC belt), 2 double AR mag pouches, 2 double pistol mag pouches, fancy lower, scruffy upper and a scratched up Shadow. I ended up sharing 9th thanks to a 10s penalty for forgetting about the mandatory mag change, otherwise it was a clean run. I think the extra rd on the final target in Stage 2 saved me from another 5s ;) Yikes, I didn't even know we were allowed to holster. That would have saved me a few more seconds.

One tip for shaving a few seconds off your time: Engage vertical arrays of targets down to up. That way you have muzzle rise working for you and don't have your gun blocking your next target.

I'll be shooting 2PM at Galt if you'll be doing that one.

Excellent tip re: order of engaging targets!

Nope, won't be shooting at Galt unfortunately, but good luck!

Also, I had no idea new results were posted, I'll go grab them and update my previous post, thanks!

Lol thanks.. The old results looked embarrassing for me especially since I was saying that I shot pretty well but got screwed by the (well-deserved) penalty, but couldn't explain the close to a minute discrepancy between the originally posted result and the way I thought I shot. That's why I asked for a stage breakdown to see where I lost time and when TGS reviewed the scoresheet, they saw that some crossed out penalties from the sheet were added in error.

Results updated in my previous post. :)

Yeah.... thanks a LOT! Because of that I'm now 14th instead of 13th!

:)

Consider it a minor sacrifice to rectify a major wrong ;) I'm betting it was over 30 spots difference in my case :sok2 With that being said, we both most likely moved up 5-10 spots just because all the really good guys were shooting that shotgun match at EESA. For me, even with the penalty, this match was a positive. No mechanical issues, clean shoot, only one major brain-fart (once I got hit with 50s in procedurals for engaging 5 targets outside the box :( ), and while my form still needs a lot of polish, at least it showed up in this match. Something to build on

In the video on stage one. You fired 6 shots with carbine beside the barrier. Squad one was forced to fire through the port and only allowed 5 round mags. Some being allowed to holster and some not. This playing field was rather uneven. In any match competitors should all be playing by the same rules.
The round count was not even close to what was posted. 16 carbine and 21 pistol, that's not 40 and 40 as was advertised. Feels like the stages were thrown together last minute. The staff running it all seemed like nice guys but there are big improvements to be made here.

This was their first match thrown and it was a pretty good one considering the fact that they wanted to keep it open to new shooters just giving action shooting a first try. Because they expected a lot of new action shooters to show up, they posted up a round count large enough for extra shots and reshoots if needed. Typically, for a match, if they say 50/100, you bring 100/200 at least to be safe, but everybody gets told that even before their holster course and learns it by attending a match or two. A lot of guys who attended this one didn't have any of that guidance, so it's better to be cautious.

Weird about stage one. During the walkthrough, I even specifically asked whether shooting beside the barricade was OK as most matches would have made that one as a mandatory shoot for the port and the RO confirmed it.

Yes, there are definitely improvements to be made, but it was not a bad first showing at all, considering the fact that they are really starting from scratch. They also seem to be willing to listen, so I'm optimistic about the next one.
