Thinking about a 22lr conversion for my SR1911 if I can ever get my hands on more ammo. Is there any good reason to spend $500 on the Kimber when the GSG can be had for $229?

honestly for the price of the conversion I'd buy a GSG and lots of ammo. plus that way you end up with two guns to take with you to the range and can shoot them both rather than trying to switch over on the bench

I agree on this one. Unless you want something that you can pass on to your kids, then get an all-steel .22 1911. Or buy a cheap 1911 from EE, get a good all-steel conversion kit. GSG 1911 is the best value for money you can get. Blueline Solution offers the best customer support in the business. With a GSG 1911, you might need a rebuild kit after several thousands of rounds which is not a problem and not a big deal due to the cheaper cost compered to buying another 1911.

I have both and there's no beef with either from me. Truly the GSG is an entire gun for close to the conversion kit price. Quality wise, I tip the hat to my Kimber conversion combo. I don't really shoot the 22 myself, it's pretty much a guest gun. I'd part with the Kimber conversion kit if you want it. PM me if you'd like to discuss this.

I already have 3 handguns to take out to the range, no need for a 4th (yet). Assuming I can source some ammo my intent is to get more trigger time with the SR1911 as I am thinking of taking the Black Badge course with it. I want to get into some IPSC competitions and am considering the classic division. Switching the kit on takes what, 30 seconds? Not really a big deal.

Can't speak for the conversion kit, but I've been shooting a Stainless GSG 1911 for a while now and if the conversion kits even half as good as the real mccoy, it's a worthwhile buy.

I was in the same dilemma, and for another pistol such as a Beretta, I would get a conversion.

But for the SR1911, I am not super fast at taking it down and putting it back togeather, so I got a GSG and tuned it. I put on a real SR1911 checkered flat mainspring housing and one sided safety. I then sourced sights that are very similar to the Ruger. this way it feels the same in my hands and has a very similar sight picture.

oh and where did you get a stainless GSG1911? that is what I wanted to do, make a complete copy of the Ruger, but I had to get a black one.

I've had a real deal Colt .22 conversion unit for many years. Hardly sees the light of day since I got a GSG 1911 .22 lr.

But no, the Colt unit is not for sale....lol....

NAA.

still quite a bit cheaper than 9. as well, for breaking in new shooter, ones that are a bit scared maybe, or smaller of stature, even 9mm can be a bit off putting, whereas no one has anything but fun with .22

I've had AA conversions on Glock, Ciener on 1911, and handled the Kimber 1911. Also had the CZ Kadet kit for my 85. Now using a Nighthawk on my STI lower. Hands down the best of any I've used. The advantage of the kit is that you still benefit from the tuning done on your lower. Have not handled a GSG that feels remotely as good as an STI.

well, if you change a few things, such as the mainspring housing, safety, possibly grips, and get a trigger job and/or some other tuning, it will feel quite close :) As good as the cheaper ones anyways. Not handled the higher dollar ones myself.

where did you get a stainless GSG1911?

They (GSG) offer a "stainless" version. Reliable had some, so did Wanstalls, and Rusty Wood. I have one. Thing is it's not stainless at all. It's the exact same aluminum slide they use on the black version with the two flat sides machined raw. The frame etc is still black.
I had a spare slide that I've stripped to completely bare for a more conventional two tone look, still not stainless though.

ahh, gotcha. I was really thinking about stripping mine right down too, as it would look just like the Ruger, with the other parts on it. Not sure what I would do about the serial number.

Where I've polished the barrel / chamber, the serial is still easily visible, as it's lasered into the base material not just the paint. I think the serial number on the frame is likely the same
