cooey 64 mag conversion

Yes and the accuracy of the shooter should be the same before and after.
All you are doing is modifying the magazine well and related pieces.

The conversion would certainly be cheapest to buy direct from savage.
It's not 'drop in' but close to it.

The 64 series has only used two magazine, a plastic magazine and a keyhole looking pot metal one.

Let's see if I can remember how this was done.
Parts needed to do the mag swap/alteration.
The barrel U bracket needs to be shortened on the rear side to allow
the new mag well front flange.
The photo below shows roughly where to cut this stub off.
Not the best photo, but gives yah an eye deer.................. :D
Ignore the missing trigger guard area.
Plastic one was busted and a metal one is going on, well is on now.

There are different versions of the mag plate. Some I beleaf have a backing plate, strictly cosmetic.

The mag well installed. You are going to need those two screws as they are length specific.
Too long and you will have them rubbing on the bottom of the bolt.

T'other side fer ya lefties.
Take a note at the front of the mag well where the barrel U bracket fits.
You can see the mag well flange interfering that area, hence the need to shorten the back leg up.

Nawt the bestest photo, but this is the chunk that needs to be removed.

I'd wager based on the age that the mrk3 takes the same magazines as the savage 4c, which look similar to the new mrk2 magazines but not quite the same.

The conversion from plastic magazines to metal magazines is a straightforward affair. The only real "smithing" is the required cut in original bottommetal to reach the magazine release hasp. Many just swap out bottom metal at the same time. The new magazine well screws in exactly as the old, but the front is retained by the barrel retaining clip. One fellow CGN'er is currently in the process of altering an original barrel retaining clip to work with new magazine well, but I've never done that.

Thats right, has anyone ever tried converting a model 64 to take the mkIII mag? which I believe is the same as a MKII mag?
I considered but they are too different to just screw right on. I did slap a Cooey trigger group on a MKIII, and the componenet had to be modified slightly to fit the rifle, but sear and reset spacing were identical. It was out of frustration when replacement trigger groups arrived that had the same issues!

How much would you be willing to wager? The Lakefield MkII, and MKIII did/do use the same magazine. Same as found on new Savages today.

Obviously nothing now! Is the mrk3 also known under a different name? Can't find much on them.

Call it a gentleman's bet then...at least any other readers will avoid unnecessary confusion.

Lakefield (or some are stamped Lakefield/Mossberg) MKIII is all you get for a name. They were not produced in huge numbers, but like the 64 were affordable, utilitarian semis. Some variations in the models; the few I have had my hands on all had closed receivers requiring barrel removal to access the bolt as a 64, but there are examples with threaded plug in the rear of receiver (Mossberg style). There are examples with fold down front forestocks (also a Mossberg thing) too. A few threads on them floating around here on CGN, but not much else to find online.

I PM'd the fellow CGNer who modified an original barrel retaining clip, and hopefully they'll chime in. When they explained what they were doing I suggested they snap pics n'share. Here's an opportunity.

This will be the second conversion that I have done. I watched this video on youtube when doing the first conversion(4 parts to video).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4__k5Oen3w

Below is a little bit about my second attempt.

I was left a Original Cooey 64 with the plastic clip whem my uncle passed away, I managed to find a Magazine well and Magazine at a Fantastic price but he did not have the Barrel retaining clip so I modified the original clip I had hear (20 Min Job). The person I bought it from ( not sure if he wants me to put his name here) suggested i post the pictures here .check out the Pictures below:
Not much difference in the clips:

Here it is Cut off:

You will have to cleanup and check the thickness of where it goes on the firearm. I had to change the thickness so I actually file on the inside and outside. Usually take about 4 to 6 passes and try the clip in the rifle.

and 20 Minutes later here it is installed in my brothers 64B.
photo%205.jpg

The other thing you will need to do is modify the floor plate not much to modify. Here is a picture of the original 64 that will need to be notched, one I have notched (this one will not be as wide) and a original cooey 64b.

I also had to replace the sight elevator so I made this out of Aluminum. It is not perfect but neither was the original I took a pattern from.

I plan on reblueing the gun so I will touch up the clip when I do this, if you don't plan on rebluing then you so apply some blueing to the clip to help protect it.
=====================================================================
The Magwell and Magazine both cleaned up nicely, Got the Magwell mounted give the magazine a little cold Bluing ( whole gun needs to be hot blued, future project)

Had to modify the stock to accommodate the Magwell and add a Nylon washer under the screw next to the housing. As you can see the barrel is on but have to modify the retaing clip a little more, Also have to modify the floor plate

Well all together, the bottom cooey is the 64 that I just converted, the stock is not finished but the conversion of the Magazine is complete. The middle one is the cooey that my uncle left to my brother, the stock on this one is how mine looked when I started ( I got this one cleaned up and working good just got to refinish the stock). The last cooey is my wife's that belonged to her father, it was a 64 with a broken plastic magazine that I converted.

Awesome work and pictures speak 1000 words. Now... can someone point me to the place where I can buy the parts? Everyone says from savage.. well that's a bit vague. Is there a site ot a phone number email that you guys can Share... I'd really appreciate any info. Thank you.

I doubt anyone would walk away from such a shameless plug... I'm glad the parts were used. I was contacted about them when I ran a WTB ad for a receiver. I had one available with original Cooey Magazine. Monetarily it was fair, but the contract stipulated you share your barrel retaining clip efforts. Contract fulfilled, and good job at it too! What no one viewing sees is the effort expended cleaning the 'ol magazine well. It didn't look that pretty when shipped out!

I may have another floating around here, and will check. If that fails, you can contact Savage in Canada directly. Going through the American office adds unnecessary time n' expense, not to mention undermining a proud Canadian heritage.

Western Gun Parts Ltd

Sometimes gun shops that offer gun-smithing services may have a box of kibbles and bits.
Once I knew what was needed, I wandered over to my buddies place and raided his stash.
He had all that I needed.
Cleaned him out I suspect.
The kits were around the $50-$60 dollar mark and included a new detachable mag..........

The barrel fastening bracket as posted by the other gent is what I had to do.
His photos showed more detail than what photos I took.
It really helps to have another Cooey in the newer style to copy from.
Shhhhhhush, trade sea-krits.
