So I am starting to get tired of shooting 9mm... I am thinking of something different. Maybe its the gun ( CZ 85 ) maybe its not. Its just getting boring! I love shooting 38 special but that is in my revolver, I am thinking of a new caliber in semi auto. So I went and handled a 1911 and I was surprised how comfortable the feel of the gun was, but its in 45 acp of course. So how many of you shoot 45 and own 9mm? If cost of ammo wasn't an issue what would see more time at the range?

I get where you are coming from. 9mm becomes a pussy cat round after a while. I only shoot it because it is cheap and it's all I need for IDPA when I actually jump in! If cost no object, .45 would be my choice for sure. I think getting into reloading would make your dilemma a lot easier. You can shoot .45 for less than commercial 9mm if you reload in quantity.
I would recommend the SIG P220, the Glock 21 to try first. The 1911 platform has too many variables, features and price point for one to make a quick decision. I'm not saying don't get one, but WHICH ONE is the question!
Also, give the .40S&W a look. Cost is between the 9 and .45. Recoil is harsher than a 9 and, some would say, than a .45 also. I find the .40 kicks more while the .45 is more a pleasant push! If you are after more bang vs. a 9mm, a .40 may fit the bill.

Hmmm.... You need a 45 and a 45 needs what it was invented for.

I started with .45, sold it and went to a 9. Now I'm going back to a .45. I think I'll get a 227. I train with a 226 9/.22 so the 227 won't be a big departure for feel and drills. The cost of .45 worries me because once I get that big lead slinger I'll want to shoot it a lot. Might have to take up reloading or get another job.
I started with a S&W SW1911 .45 last fall. That was my first. LOVE IT.. But I just recently bought a IW Jericho 941 9mm. Love it.
I'd have stayed with the 1911, but it's just expensive to shoot. I DO try to put a box of ammo through it each month, but for every 2 boxes of .45 I can get 3(almost 4) boxes of 9mm. It's all about the Bang for the Buck..

I have tried the 40 and it just didn't do anything for me... I do enjoy the push of the 45 over the snappy aspect of the 40. When I want that kick I just shoot the 357 magnum. I do reload and I would reload the 45.

If you are willing to reload for the .45 then there is nothing more to say! Get one!! You won't regret it!
Now comes the tough part! Most guys are recommending the 1911. If you go down this road, as Mark II says, you won't stop at one! 4.25", 5", 6", single, double stack, ambi or no ambi, sights, full length or regular guide rod, internal or external extractor, Norc, SAM, STi, Colt, Para, Wilson, LB, Nighthawk, Kimber and the list goes on...if you are only getting one, it may take you months to make up your mind! Then again, that's half the fun!!

Have 9mm and 45 in 1911 both are fun I reload for both now.. have not develped a preference YET.
if you're getting a 45 , & want to shoot it , better order a dillon or some progressive to go with it . the press will pay for it's self very quickly , as well as giving you the option of soft ball [ nice learner loads ] or full military power .
