Well they can say you sold them the firearm. Start the transfer, then make a claim that you kept the funds and create a lot of BS for you (just a outrageous example)
But honestly, like said, it's technically private info until sold to X seller, so why disclose it.

Scammers could also use the publicly posted gun photos to defraud others. If restricted, the gun can be traced by registration to the new/old owner and cause headaches and BS.
I do it just to piss people off that have too much time on their hands.
