Why tape up or otherwise obscure the serial number of a pistol or other restricted in the EE ads? What's the fear here?

no different than people covering up their licence plate, thinking it will keep things private or something. Don't people drive around with a visible licence plate? Why cover it in a photo....

Someone can use your SIN or RPAL if you disclose it. Better safe than sorry that what happens? How can someone use your serial number against you?

Well they can say you sold them the firearm. Start the transfer, then make a claim that you kept the funds and create a lot of BS for you (just a outrageous example)

But honestly, like said, it's technically private info until sold to X seller, so why disclose it.

Ditto on private info. Pictures are only for demonstrating condition of the gun, not the identity of it.

If a buyer wants something more, they can be emailed the info.

They'd need your Rpal to do that and name and phone number etc

I can understand simply not displaying it for the principle of not sharing private identifying info, I'm just curious what a real world negative outcome could be

As many have stated, there ''may'' be no harm in sharing abundant info online, but there is even less harm keeping as much information private.
The internet is quite the public place, many cautions need to be taken as to what you write and what you share about yourself.
So by your logic you would feel safe posting your license plate number here?

I don't know, but I also don't intend to find out first hand.

Scammers could also use the publicly posted gun photos to defraud others. If restricted, the gun can be traced by registration to the new/old owner and cause headaches and BS.

I do it just to piss people off that have too much time on their hands.

Good enough reason as any. ;)
