Russia selects new assault rifles

The conclusion: A545 is better, but AK12 is cheaper and Kalashnikov Concern has more political clout ( and in need of getting people employed ).

New spin on the old rifle.

"The AK-12 is a fifth generation AK-pattern rifle, featuring several ergonomic improvements, a bolt catch, accessory rails, and a telescopic buttstock. The AK-12 is also has a lower recoil impulse than the AK-74M. Design work on the AK-12 began in August 2011 with the first prototype unveiled on 24 January 2012. The rifle is fed from 30 round AK-74 box magazines, but 60 and 95 rounds magazines are also available."

economic stimulus.... those crazy Russkies have more assault weapons than you can shake a stick at... and pretty much all re-inventing the wheel (AK) This is just to keep people working instead of protesting in the streets at their tanking economy... while the cycle of corruption slowly continues

sure wish we could help them out.. we could take all those ancient ak-47's in cosmo.. and their archaic ammo of course!

literally looks like something bubba'd up by a CGN member....

You know, the most astounding fact is that we see second North Korea in the making just before our eyes - can't do ####, hype all you do, praise the leader, blame aggressive world. Once a nation of engineers and cosmonauts became medieval mafia state you can't really expect a groundbreaking innovation even in weaponry, sorry.

It makes sense for them and the AK platform is still being used even by people who could get any other assault rifle for free. This way at least they can run some dots and I wouldn't be surprised if they came up with a good one that will trickle down into the export market. Not a huge improvement over the 47/74 platforms, but still welcome.

Not too much different from modernizing the AR platform really, except they seem to still be 10-15 years behind the West. That being said, it looks like they wanted rail, rail and more rail.

So pretty much just an AK-74M, with a new switch.

They really can't get away from it, and even back in the 70s, the AK-74 was just to be an "interim" solution for a new, much more advanced rifle that was in the works.

Same thing happened with the T-72, which was an intermediate tank, that became their mainstay, then slightly upgraded as a T-90 and no replacement in sight.

I guess that happens when you are perpetually underfunded. Damn Ruskies need to figure out a proper, working economy first.

Sounds like Russia is developing (if their economy can handle it) a new tank that is built to run in the arctic circle.

Yes, they are eyeing the oil/gas up there that hard.

Thought their T90-A was as good as any other tank out there? Or am I misinformed?

Rofl. Once a nation of engineers and cosmonauts? The russians have a history of copying everything. Take this lovely 6th gen stg44 er i mean 5th gen ak for example.

T-90 will mince T-72s all day long but no they really aren't all that when compared to a modern abrams, challenger 2 or leoard 2s available today.

You'd think they would've gone the extra mile and made it a bullpup, like pretty much all other modern armies around the world are doing. The modern way seems to be "as compact as can be" for the urban setting. This thing is anything but!

In fact, it looks like an SKS with some sort of an Archangel stock.... and rails! lots and lots of rails! (because the amount useless sh*t you can attach to a rifle to make it twice as heavy will surely determine the course of a war!)
