red dot on sks

Plan to put it on a wartak mount

Buy Canadian. The MagWedge rails are lower profile and an awesome product.

Full length rails give you more options down the road if you want to scope it.

But if you're going with just a red dot, track down a BC Tactical mini rail, that just replaces the rear sight. Leaves the receiver open for stripper clips, and is an easier install - or so I've heard. I don't have any personal experience with them, but they're quite well thought of. I'm tempted to get one just to throw my Vortex Spark on it. (The spark is currently attached to a rifle that I just don't shoot much, so it's a bit of a waste of a nice optic). This would involve sneaking another SKS into the house... Once in the house, I'm fine, because my wife has already lost track of the # of rifles I have, and they all look the same to her.

I went with a rock solid Choate mount for my SKG Para model. I can still use stripper clips and use the open sights. I have improvised a cheek pad with a bit of padding inside an old ammo sleeve. Shoots very well with my Bushnell try 25.

Most red dot sights have unlimited eye relief, little or no magnification, fast target acquisition and ideally suited to CQB. I am partial to open style red dots. For me they are easier to find the dot and maintain sight on the target. My son has a scope and red dot mounted on his AR he uses for competition. Very effective combo. I am going with a UTG quad rail forearm system from High Caliber http://www.hical.ca/sks-quad-railed-forearm-system-utg-569/ . It adds 10.9 oz of weight plus the red-dot/long eye relief scope combo I choose. Lots of room for other toys. No gunsmithing required just bolt it on over the existing wood stock. Easy Peasy! UTG has a slotted tri rail if you want to keep the bayonet. The down side for many is the rail must be removed for cleaning but that doesn't bother me I like to tinker. When all my parts arrive I will post a picture.

That rail wad a nice addition but needed to be removed each time the rifle was clean. I wasnt satisfied it would hold zero as a result. The rail also added a bunch of weight. Although not much weight by the time i added a rds and a light it was very front navy. I found the rifle didn't point add nicely due to balance as before. My two cents

I've heard of people breaking optics when using the BC Tactical rail. I would choose MagWedge Kwik and will be putting that on my next setup - I currently have a wartak, but the magwedge is better. If you're looking for scout mounts, there are some you can get from the US but they're always sold out, it would be my preference.

I run the BC tactical with a TRS 25 It works and holds zero it allows just enough clearance to load with stripper clips and you can remove the gas tube for cleaning without removing the red dot. You will need a cheek rest to bring your eye up to the center as it does sit higher. I like it as my old eyes will not focus on the standard front sight so for me it improved accuracy

I have a Bushnell TRS-25 mounted on a Magwedge Kwikrail. I love the rail and I'm happy with the dot for what I do with it, seems to hold zero no problem even after cleaning. I was debating putting on a Vortex SPARC, and if it were any other rifle I may have..

Yes. I wrecked a brand new Trs 25 with that mount. Smashed the rear lens out. It's a great mount but you are limited to tiny, tiny optic systems. I thought the trs would be small enough but nope. Needs to be half the size. BC Tactical would be kind to note that on the website. That was a real bad day.

I can't work out how you managed to do that. My TRS 25's with BC Tactical mounts have been good for 1000's of rounds, I have the same set up on two sks's, never a problem.

This guy's got the right idea. Honestly, I love mine. Pretty easy to install (took a rubber mallett and a bit of fitting) and I just threw a TRS-25 on top. Don't expect a co-witness or anything, but it's low-profile and I have no issues with stripper clips.
