Best balance of recoil and terminal performance in a cartridge.

The .280 Rem fills that role for me. Better bullet selection than the .270 Win. More oomph than the smaller 6.5s while still having benign recoil, to get the same ballistics in .30 cal you start getting some decent recoil (realitve of course.)

I like 30 cal magnums, but I don't think there is a more balanced practical cartridge than the .280 Rem.

.270, .280, .308 Win, 30/06. Flip a coin or go with the .308 Win if a short action is desired. Ying/Yang, bullet placement & construction are paramount.

Not pick on you specifically Cam, but this line of thinking is absolute BS. Ive been reloading for over 20 years, and know 100's of other reloaders. Of them I am the only person that has reloaded outside of the 120-160gr availability that is their for both cartridges. They get the same velocity with the same BCs and they recoil the same. Ive loaded 90gr-180gr in .270s and 100grs-195grs in 7mms. Reasonable people find them synonymous.

I'd have to agree it's picking at fly poop to find a practical difference. What I meant is usually from an availability and selection standpoint you have somewhat more bullet selection with a 7mm. Although this can be negated exactly how you said (most don't reload outside of that 40 grain spread.)

I use a 280, but a 7x57 is a great choice. I used 6.5s many years ago, and some bullets did not open up on game very well.mostly Norma, that had a souring effect on what is a good caliber. Most of the medium caliber rounds ( sub 06) in a standard weight gun, will have good recoil and kill well with proper placement.

A lot of people pretty close to agreement.
While several picked the excellent 7 x 57, the fact is it is a virtual twin to the 7-08.
Wile ammo and brass are not plentiful for the 7 x 57, the 7-08 ammo is a Walmart and Canadian Tire shelf item, plus no end of brass available via 308 Winchester.
Thus, without doubt, I would say the 7-08 as the ideal selection.
