I know I asked last year for some tips on getting started but I am now a bit closer and have more questions.
I picked up a "used" MEC sizemaster yesterday (looks like its never been used) I did an online search for recipes, found one I thought looked interesting and started looking for components.
1) Should I be reading everything I can find and then some regarding loading before attempting or should I be OK with the basics I have been reading up until this point providing I strictly adhere to the recipe and all components listed therein?
2) Where do you find components? Everyone I've looked up so far is out of Aliant Steel powder...Do I just wait patently for it to come back into stock and buy a gross? Is there other safe/reliable recipe's with different powders?

The trouble with a team gauge is lack of data available. Very few high speed loads listed all the older heavy shot charge slow loads. Shot gun powder is made of unobtainium at the moment. I have only loaded lead for mine I did buy some bismuth to load for next goose season. Really high priced but even at five dollars a shell I really do not want more than a half a dozen geese to eat in a year anyhow so even shooting 50 percent it is 60 dollars a year. It will give you 70 yard knock down power or so I have been told something to think about perhaps. Also there is data for loads with other powders. When you find hulls or wads for the ten just stock up few places carry them.
 
Have to get a R.S.I. Steel Shotshell Reloading Handbook V111 from Precision reloading in the US next. Wholesale sports sold them also at one time
If you are reloading steel yes you have to wait for STEEL powder
Nothing else comes close

Yep. Don't know where they are today but remember these reports
In 1978 canadians bought approx 555, 000 waterfowl permits which dropped to 197,500 in 1999
Know a lot of the guys I hunted with at the time went on to other things or forms of hunting
They also say today many of these permits are bought by birders who collect the stamps but never hunt
God knows

yup. I'm one of those...never have nor never will used a single round of steel...no use buying the license if I'm not going to use steel....
 
Thanks for the help! Ended up taking a tour to Ottawa yesterday afternoon and spent some time with a reloading guru up there. The man has a ton knowledge. Between what you guys have given me and his crash course I'm pretty confident that I can get the ball rolling now.
 
Quick question, does anyone actually have aliant steel in stock? Any store I've contacted have been out....Looking like my reloading is going to be held back a bit.

Where ??? Please share It was banned a few years ago and only started to be reproduced again in an improved version late last fall
Have not seen any new stuff for sale yet even state side
May be someone might have a jug of the old shot collecting dust on a shelf but that would be the old original and a fluke to find

You might as well shoot gold for the price of Bismuth.available from the same source I posted for 10ga components.I have 10ga steel data if you need it.Harold

Never got banned in canada ( why am I not suprised )but others sure forced them to stop making it. The reason is like trying to find out the caramilk secret but I did find one study which I will try to find for you. Seems after being used a while and some soil and bird samples were taken it was not the non tox they thought

The quick answer not my words
It was causing an entire new set of enviromental problems with soil thus was stopped production. Over time it would would negatively affect the soil PH and the growth of vegetation in the area. Thus would have an (indirect) negative effect on the health of animals living in that particular environment.

About a month ago a bud tried all across canada in the usual spots ( plus he travels out west to work so )and came up with none as far as STEEL powder goes. I gave him a pound to get him going which he is going to replace when someone he deals with gets some in. I assume it has not changed since then unfortunately since he has not been able to replace or buy some for himself so far
