Just finished my scout Mosin project. This is a completely reversible build done a very nice 1938 91/30 that had a great barrel.
Started with a big old Ash log
Cut the blank with a chainsaw and planer, then got to work with the hand tools
Lotsa tedious labor involved here, the sandpaper belt worked great for inletting the mag after drilling some starter holes.
All fitted up. I bedded the action and free floated the barrel
All along I was fitting the stock to my hand and face. As a left eyed, right handed shooter I hadn't been able to find a stock that I liked.
I had wanted to retain some aspects of the original Mosin design while customizing to my own preferences. I think it ended up as a cross between a montecarlo, a target and a mosin stock all rolled into one. I did a red shellac finish.
Took it out and shot it today. Had the 3-7 LER sighted after 5 shots then did two 3 shot groups. One at 100yd and one at 150. Did 1.75" at 100. And 2" at 150 yd. If I hadnt been freezing I am confident I could clover leaf this thing at 150, maybe even 200 yds although I may need more than 7X.
The gun is 10 lbs which is exactly what I wanted for a deer stand gun. Recoil is virtually nill at that weight. My custom recoil lug seems to be perfect as there was no movement anywhere, including the scope and dovetail mount.
