Advice on IPSC Production gun: SP-01 Shadow or P30L

I just took my black badge course with my Para 14-45 but I'm looking for something that I can shoot in production division. I've narrowed it down to a CZ 75 SP-01 Shadow and a HK P30LS SA/DA with decocker. I have not shot either and probably won't be able to without just buying one so I'm looking for input from you guys. I like the HK more (and like having a decocker) but everything I read says the CZ is a better and more popular gun for IPSC. Anyone here have experienced with either or both of these pistols? The price of the HK doesn't bother me too much but the thought of getting a better IPSC pistol for less money has me thinking. :confused::confused:
 
Where are you located?
Chances are someone local to you is using a Shadow.
They are quite common in Production.
Unless you are in a remote part of Canada, you should be able to coordinate with someone to try theirs out.

I agree, I shoot a Glock 17 in production and most of the other guys like the CZ's. Mid priced good quality pistols. I still think people not really shooting the HK may be purely since it is very expensive compared to the CZ, Glock, M&P etc.

Even if they're the same price range, good luck finding spare parts as the Canadian HK distributor went kaput few months ago and the new distributor has only been announced last week so everything is still up in the air.

You're not gaining anything any competitive advantage with a HK vs the 2 proven polymer platforms - Glock/M&P. But if OP is shooting for fun and he has a real hard on for HK then by all means.

Not having to have a 5+ pounds trigger pull on every shot is an advantage... there is a reason that the top guys are not using striker fired guns for IPSC.

In USPSA it's a different story.
 
My Shadow on left and Tanfoglio Stock 2 on right. All the cool kids are using a Stock 2 for production but that's only because the top 3 production guys at the Worlds used them. Hehe I joke I joke. ��



Agreed, the striker fired guns are at more a disadvantage in IPSC vs USPSA
 
What part of NB are you in? Which club do you belong to? I have a shadow you're welcome to try if you're close. I'm just outside of Fredericton. There's more than a couple shadow's floating around, if you don't mind waiting I'm sure you'll find a chance to shoot one before the season starts. Worse case, shoot your first match with the Para. Chances are good someone will have a shadow at the match. Also, talk with your BB instructor, they probably know someone with a shadow they can put you in touch with.
 
In my experience the shadow is a terrific gun for production division. One real problem we had, was getting spare, or competition parts and service. My understanding is that this situation has been somewhat resolved.

My solution was to switch to Tanfoglio. The Canadian distributor is in Halifax, and stocks every part imaginable. The Stock 3 is in my opinion better in every way than the Sp-01.

I'm a member of the St Croix Sportmen Club outside of St. Stephen and the River Valley club on the Kingston Peninsula. I left just outside saint john. Thanks for the offer though! Hopefully I be able to get out to some matches once all this snow is gone!!
 
Seems like the consensus is CZ! Although to clarify the HK is not striker fired. It is SA/DA with DA pull same as the CZ and 1 pound less than the CZ in SA (at least according to what is published for stock triggers). Everyone seems quite content with the CZ so no reason to mess with a good thing.

Do they have a website?
 
Sure, the shadow will give you a slight advantage vs. any other pistol. But if you shoot 50% on a best day, it won't make a difference. Personally, I'd get a tanfoglio stock 2 extreme and get done with it.

^^^ Let me offer you a different perspective on this.

The question is : What floats your boat? I.e. what do you want to get out of by shooting IPSC? Some possible motives are (not limited to!):

1. The rush of running and gunning and rapid firing in a controlled and safe environment
In this case, shoot the gun YOU LIKE.

2. The rush of seeing your hit factors beat everyone else's
Well, if you play to win then I would get a Shadow or a Tanfo, not because everyone else has one, but IMHO these 2 guns have all the characteristics which will (no 100% guarantee) likely to give me the advantage as far as equipment goes. The rest (80%?) will rely on the shooter's skills.

For me, in most of the matches I would shoot my Glock 17 because of reason #1, where as in a few special matches I'll take my Shadow out for a spin because of reason #2.
