Shot show 2015 unveils a new Savage 17HMR in semi auto. Apparently they have figured out what couldn't be done previously and are going to release a 17HMR that cycles without issue. As I understand it they have some kind of lock mechanism built in to combat previous pressure problems and have teamed up with CCI to use ammo that is 100 FPS faster than standard fare ammo.
They say that it will still cycle regular ammo but the specific "A17" ammo is designed specifically for their semi.

I am a 17 fan but am disappointed by what I see in the videos.....looks like another bmag BS stock option......what happened to wood stocks....just my preference I guess but looking forward to a 17HMR semi that will likely be more reasonable than the volquartzen option that I have now been 2 years waiting for since ordering.

I'm more excited to see how the ammo will be in my cz 452 then anything. That extra speed should be great. I already get over 2600 with the 17gr stuff.

As for wood stocks they cost more then cheap china plastic. You know as well as I do most people want everything as cheap as they can thats why discount stores do so well. Not many people want to go buy a good quality product once in their life when they can go buy 45 crappy products.

Agreed, it will be the equivalent of the 22LR stinger :) I guess I can understand the logic of Savage producing a low price point rifle but options would have been nice. The Bmag was disappointing but a boyds stock helped, although I waited until they came out with the bull barrel. May have to do the same with the A17

I'll wait and see what the accuracy is like from a semi platform. I'm more than impressed with my two model 93 17's, but I imagine it could be a expensive little plinker to feed being a semi, but imagine the devastation in the gopher patch

I got my better half hooked into joining me in the gopher patch by getting her a little buckmark rifle.....her favorite shots are on the run and I gotta confess...she is pretty good! I haven't quite confessed to her that my bolt actions are lil more accurate than her semi, she thinks I am just an amazing shot.......is it wrong that I haven't explained the difference? :) For sure it will be more expensive but a day in the gopher patch with the sun on our face, outdoors, and enjoying ourselves is equivalent to an evening to dinner and a movie price wise.....Ill take the gopher patch any day.

it does look promising but i'll be waiting for more field testing and accuracy reports over the long run.
i read somewhere that we'll be looking at a cost in the $500 range.
if they solved the high pressure issue, others will follow suit and hopefully we will have other manufacturers of 17hmr semi rifles in the future.....nothing wrong with savage though,i love my axis and have no idea why there are so many haters out there?lol

I am one of those fools that does the field testing....... I can put the 22wmr semi down (22LR just doesn't stretch out enough for me) and pick up a 17HMR semi for the gopher patch?? Gotta have it! :) I confess, even if its spray and pray I will shoot it until a more accurate/better stocked option comes out. Patience when it comes to firearms isn't a virtue I shine at, lol

I'll hold out until results trickle in.

I really don't think I'll need a faster rate of fire over my T-bolt 17hmr, and it doesn't need "special" ammo.

I am a lefty and have a RH tbolt that I can cycle pretty fast. I agree, its definitely not about need, its about want :) Apparently this A17 will cycle anything, the ammo will be a bonus to the calibre no matter the platform.

I'm anxiously awaiting the reports on this gun. If accuracy/safety/longevity is there...I'll start saving for the heavy barrel version when it comes out. I had no use for an HMR here in Ontario in recent years, but I spent a 2-1/2 days in gopher patches out west last summer shooting HMR and well...I'm a fan again. :) I can't even imagine a semi in some of the situations I found myself in last year. I was knocking them over like bowling pins with the bolt gun! :) If there is a more entertaining varmint-shooting experience...I'd sure like to know what it is! :)

And yes...tried a .223 on them, and got lots with a 12ga. 870 Police.

They *say* it will cycle any 17 ammo, then why make special ammo?

I see Savage using this ammo as a crutch if there are problems...

I don't. I think it would be a disaster for Savage if the A17s don't run on all HMR ammo. My guess is that the A17 "super" HMR ammo will come at a real premium when in fact...it probably doesn't cost CCI even $0.01 more per round to load. I have a Marlin HMR rifle on it's way to me, and really wish there was some of this A17 ammo to try with it. I'm curious to see how it shoots, but if it's crappy...I'll have 190 leftovers. I highly doubt it's $50 (or less) for a box of 200.

I agree with both of you. I think Savage will use the "you aren't using the intended ammo" card if there is a repeat in what we have already experienced with the regular retail 17HMR semi's. At the same time I think...hope...dream, that Savage has finally nailed the blowback operation so that we can have an affordable 17HMR semi, regardless of the ammo. Quite likely the A17 will be the "CCI stinger" 17HMR round.
The thump of a good hit from a center fire is awesome! I don't use my 17HMR for chickens, I have an old 22/410 for those. The 17HMR or HM2 are mostly for gophers with a few badgers thrown in (5 last year).
I let the better half have all of the 75yd and unders with her 22LR and use the 17HMR/HM2 for the further ones. Its almost the most fun you can have with your clothes on :)

lol.. Agreed. Don't make me post pics. :) (gophers)

I was talking with Phil at P&D yesterday and he said he got to handle the A17 at the shot show. He confirmed it had the same Bmag feeling stock. Apparently they are not ready to be ordered yet but once they are AND he can get ammo for them he will be bringing them in. He isn't confident that we will see them here in Canada this year though :( as with all good things.....hurry up and wait!
