Coyote Hunting : Which Bullet for harvesting pelts?

I don't think there is a way to shoot a coyote with a .270 and still use the fur. I have shot coyotes with a .30-06 slinging 125 gr. rounds and it made a huge mess. Real good way to anchor them where they are, but not a good way to make money. That is the reason I bought a .243, I can shoot coyotes with it and make some cash and not loose the capabilities of killing a deer either.

Yea, I suppose it was just more of a thought, I am really just doing it for the fun of the sport. I just figured I would look into the "money making" aspect of it just simply to see if I could make a few bucks to pay for the expensive sport hunting can be haha. Thanks all for the info!

I haven't saved any money reloading. With the cost of equipment, brass, bullets, etc. The real benifit is finding the load for your rifle and it's a hobby on its own.

Isnt that the whole point of reloading, to save money? I may be mistaken, like I said, im pretty new to it

If that's your "whole point" you are in for a disappointment.

The real point is to make ammo for YOUR rifle that is better than factory stuff. You are very unlikely to save money, even though the cost per round will be lower.

Since we're on this topic. I recently purchased a .243 specifically for coyotes and pelt collecting.

What are you guys using for bullets? I'm assuming less is more. (55gr preferred)

Currently I just have federal 80gr soft points.

Try your 80 gr. the 243 can be a bit tough on pelts once again depending on angle and what you hit. This includes the 58 gr vmax. Lots is guys use heavier/deer type bullets preferably with a reduced load (2600 fps) area. Some use fmj. I was using 55 gr varmegeddon with ok results. Now have loaded up some 100gr hornady to hopefully not destroy fox pelts.

As far as the 270 goes reduced loads would probably work ok. Maybe even cast. I did manage to take one at 100yds with cast out of a 303 Brit with no hide damage. Think it was a through and through. Ideally you would want something between the 17 hornet to 243. The 243 being on the high end though.

If you have a 12 g load it up with no4 buck. Pattern it and have a go with that.

We have had good success with 55gr Ballistic tips and 58gr Vmax bullets in our 243.

I shoot 65gr v-max over 40.1 gr of IMR 4320 in my .243 with good results very little pelt damage if decent shot placement. If crapy shot placement then crapy results. Lots of my hunting buddies like an 80gr psp rather then the light 53-58gr ballistic tip options.
