I'm not the type to usually post this type of thing. But I had my SKS out at the range the other day trying to confirm it's accuracy with a new vortex sparc on it. To say I'm pleased is an understatement. The pic below is the best 5 shot group of the day at 50 yards. I'd thought I'd post it, as it's probably a personal best in terms of a day of shooting overall. The groups opened up a little bit at 100 yards but I was still overall quite happy.

I think there is something really special about using milsurps to hunt with. From my reading, 123 grain SST should be great out to a max of about 100 yards for deer.

That is a beautiful group! I've tried everything I can to get mine to tighten up like that. I've used every commercial round that I can get including the Hornady re-manufactured SST's, and the best I've been able to do at 50 yds. is about 2-1/2". My Lyman reloading manual says Reloader 7 is the preferred powder, but try to find some in the GTA! I've loaded and tested every combination of Hornady and Speer bullets and powder (H335 and H4895) that I can get. I have a box of Federal "Fusion" that I'm going to try, and I bought some Hornady SST bullets that I've reloaded myself for testing. I have nailed a nice little buck with my SKS, and a 2-1/2" group will do the job at 50 yds., but I'd love to get better grouping. If I can't, I'll get another SKS to try out.

Probably the best looking, most reasonable SKS build I've seen on here. Well done. Hope she brings home the venison for you.

Honestly, I haven't done much to mine. The trigger is getting better with time, the group in the photos is with the SST but most of the shooting has been with a case of Norinco Surplus. I use a thin coat of "permatex ultra slick multi purpose synthetic grease" to lubricate all contact points between the receiver, the bolt carrier, and the bolt. It has made a huge difference in the way this rifle runs when I compare it to just balistol in the past.

Best I have gotten is 3.5" groups at 200yards using Romanian surplus ammo in my SKS-D. I think the sks has been quite maligned for accuracy, they are not tack drivers but that´s more than accurate enough for bringing home some meat.

Just make sure you've got the bayonet extended when you shoot your first deer with it.

Nothing to do with accuracy! I just know I'd kick myself afterwards if I wasn't in true milsurpy form when I pulled the trigger. And don't forget to wildly yell something about this deer being for mother Russia right before pulling the trigger.
