[I posted this to the wrong spot, sorry, so I copied it here; not sure how to delete the other one]
Today I got lucky. My wife bought me a Mini-14. This is not what I was expecting. I thought she wanted me to take her shopping, next thing I know we are in front of Cabela's and we are putting total of $1,400 on her credit card. She bought me a Tikka a few years ago, so she knows how to make me happy (specially since I was grumpy after I was put on a hot seat and sold off my beloved Benelli Nova Pump).
Anyway, now I like to get a reasonable scope for it. It is a Ruger Mini-14 Ranch (18.5" barrel) all-weather. A little heavier than I thought, but I guess it is rugged and that gas system is heavy. I love the action on it. I can't wait to shoot it.
Only a few months ago I was about to pick up a Ruger Mini-30 all-weather, and I ended up getting a Marlin 1894 .44 Rem Meg (which I LOVE).
Anyway, what scope do you guys suggest? I am not into predator or varmint shooting. This is not a target rifle (I use my American 455 .22LR for target practice, and my Tikka T3 Lite SS in .25-06 Rem for real target shooting). The rifles feel very close to each other, so no issues with muscle memory (although triggers are kept at original weight as I use these for hunting too, and don't like light trigger for that).
Back to my question. What scope should I get for my Ruger Mini-14? It shoots .223 Rem. I'll use it for targets up to 200 yards, and maybe whitetail at under 100 yards. I think it will be more of a plinking rifle. It is a .223, so I can take it to the range near my home (indoor, which sucks).
I was thinking I go for a Leupold Mark AR MOD 1 1.5-4x20mm w/ Illuminated Firedot-G SPR (http://www.leupold.com/hunting-shoot...-1-1-5-4x20mm/) I will never own an AR (I don't want to get a restricted license).
I wish AR's were not restricted. Anyway, this is as close as I get to it for plinking at range and in the field.
This is good glass, gives me opportunity to shoot w/ both eyes open on moving targets in the bush and lets me shoot to maximum effective range of .223 Rem (for my ability, that's under 200 yards).
Who do you guys suggest?
