Seen this rifle in the latest issue of Recoil Magazine. New York State compliant. Not bad looking. Keeps the evil black rifle comments down as it comes with a normal rifle rear stock, also safety has been moved ala Rem 870. Takes standard ar mags and AR uppers.

AR upper=AR variant. Restricted.

It's not for us, it's for states with dumb assault weapons bans that believe a pistol grip makes a rifle more deadly....

Ar180b non-restricted and AR180 upper receivers bolt right on. Its likely it will be named a variant but I have never heard of one being submitted and receiving a FRT number. I too am curious to know if any where imported and if they really where considered a variant.

AR uppers are not the firearm or variant. The lowers the firearm with the serial number and therefore restricted as modifications and parts sets for full auto trigger groups can in most cases be dropped in. The ARES SCR uses a unique non AR lower that mates to its own upper or any AR upper but only with its unique bolt carrier group making it possible and this bolt group will not work with semi or full auto AR lowers. This gives it a good chance at being non restricted like the AR180B providing they lengthen the barrel slightly.--Thanks--Dieseldog and I e-mailed the company in Florida and they never responded!

I agree that company is likely busy building things for the US and care very little about the small market up here. Hell they might not even have export permits. I personally don't think it is a variant but it will still take years from the date of first import to get the RCMPs final decree. So here's to hoping.

The uneductaed conjecture is pointless. RCMP rule is that if the lower receiver can discharge an AR15 upper, it is an AR15. If they have to duck tape the upper on, and it still discharges, it is an AR15. If it looks like an AR15, it is an AR15. The SCR lower accepts standard AR15 upper receivers, therefore it is an AR15 and it is Restricted as a variant of the AR15.

That is the general thought though how to you explain the AR180b which wasn't named a varient of the AR180 a named prohibited. The AR180 upper does bolt to the ar180b lower and fires without modification. The RCMP has no official rule that you so mention. Now things have been named variants that are not before. So you point is valid but it is also uneducated conjecture. Now if you know if somebody has tried importing and got a ruling or even summited for a ruling that would be useful but as of right now its all just conjecture. It will likely remain that way for the foreseeable future. I am rather curious to know if anybody has tried importing one.

I think that you have to remember that one of the major concerns with the AR is in that it I'm most cases can easily be converted into a machine gun. This of course is possible because the most important part of the conversion is having a full auto or burst trigger group which are readily available and easy to install even if you have a semi only lower a minor machining will allow you to fit the full auto trigger group. This is where the ARES lower receiver is unique and although you can fit any AR upper providing the required use of the ARES uniqe conversion bolt carrier group which provides no full auto capability on its part the ARES lower reciver is semi auto only, does not use AR trigger parts and has never been offered in a full auto version. This is why I think with a non restricted length barrel it would stand a better chance of being classed non restricted.--Thanks for hearing ame out--Dieseldog!
