Casting Metal Sources Help Required

I must be Irish because of all the luck I have had this last week. I went to get my oil changed at a place I worked at years ago and the owner let me have 2- 5 gallon pails full of wheel weights. Must be over 200 pounds. Free is an awesome price.

OK, that's not fair ! I have been busting my ass for weeks driving around to every type of shop possible and got 100 % turned down !! Maybe I don't smile good enough ??/ LOL CONGRATS on your find !!

I have wheelweight ingots in my garage I'd sell for $1.25/lb, but that's picked up. I've tried to sell before on CGN and at local Gun Shows but no takers.

For all the hand-wringing by so many people, what the majority really want are free or almost free lead - that leaves me out as a seller.

Yup....the other extreme is there too. Had a guy offer me a real deal yesterday, $2.00/lb for unknown lead. Would have loved to see his face when I told him I don't pay more than $0.55/ lb

If you know the makeup of your lead then your price is right on the money. Just keep advertising it and it will happen. If not, when ever you want to drive out to Vancouver area, bring it with you ! :)

It's wheelweight, melted down from what I picked up at tire shops with the stick-on weights set aside.

Now I'm starting to see. It needs to have a certificate from an assayer and be free or nearly so.

I suggest a foundry somewhere if you must know "makeup", or a local tire shop, if it must be cheap. The two don't co-exist.

So true ! I would think you have the right makeup for most people as it's always listed as one of the best starting points. Hang in there, it will sell.

Oh boy. I thought I found a source for lead and tin today, but was I wrong. I called Metal Supermarket in Edmonton to follow up information my friend gave me. Well...they do have 4.5 lb lead ingots for $36! Tin was $50 for a 1 lb ingot! I had to control my laughter when the guy told me his pricing.

Pure 1 # tin bars in the US are $17.00 retail, shouldn't be much more here. Last reading on world price for lead was .84, where the hell did they come up with that price ??? I went to a local foundry and got quoted $1.20 per lb. Hell , even the people who offered to sell me some lead to help me out wanted more than retail ??? You should have laughed out loud !!

Small update. Of all the shops that I canvassed to buy their wheel weights (well over thirty six ) and they all had companies that picked their lead up, not one shop knew how much they were getting for the lead !! Funny way to run a business ! Looks like I have to buy retail at scrap yards, way too much running around with no rewards ! Too bad, I thought that was going to be the fun part, but, no fun at all !

All,
just passing on a little info. No commercial benefits to me. I found a metal recycler/smelter in the Vancouver lower mainland area Canada. The company is called Metalex in Richmond, British Columbia.
They sell 60 lb ingots of a number of different alloys applicable to bullet casting. No custom alloy orders. The last prices/orders i got were $1.29 CAN/pound 99.98% lead and $1.40 CAN/pound 3% antimony. They have other alloys, more antimony=more money. This is much better than the "usual" bullet metal suppliers that charge $2.00+ US/pound. I do not think they ship (except in large tonnage), but if you are in the area and you want clean smelted, tested alloy, you might try them out

I don't think so . Some independent tire/repair shops have no problem selling their wheel weights to people that ask.

That is the key, "Some" shops will sell but most are governed by their head office in recycling used lead WW. You have to do a lot of leg work to find one that will sell to you.

Like I said 10 years ago you better get your lead now because companies are being mandated in a lot of the US states into only using recyclers and it will only be a matter of time before it comes north of the boarder.

Unfortunate but I was correct and it is very hard to find used WW's. Concentrate on the mom and pa shops forget about the big name stores.

I know the place, I was there about a month ago. Lots of different alloys, available in 60 # ingots, but only if the boss wants to break up a pallet , as most of the buyers are commercial contracts. The way things are going for me trying to find wheel weights and losing out 99 % of the time, I will end up going there and trying to buy some. Thanks for the info !
