.177 caliber pellet brain shot for raccoon?

Trap animal, put blanket over trap, put hose from vehicle exhaust under blanket. Make sure blanket it is wrapped reasonably well. Simple, easy, humane. Animal sleeps to death. Done it many times with 'coons, skunks, etc. Also has the benefit of being quiet in neighbourhoods where that counts.

Some of the newer vehicles will not produce sufficient Carbon Monoxide to kill a coon [Or any other animal]

Using a gas analyzer on many new vehicles shows no detectable CO at the tailpipe, once the catalyst is "light off"

Regards, Dave.

10 Gauge Slug, right up close. I'm just kidding, unless you want to do some serious cleaning. .22 should do.

I think the 10gauge would do all the cleaning for you? Also as a side note from a biologist friend of mine. Drowning is actually painless... full of fear but painless. I have a friend whose traps are always out and each one has maybe 30' of rope tied to handle.... to retrieve from the pond.

The vehicle still will produce CO₂ which will kill things in a confined space. It would need to be at least a concentration of 7-10%. Carbon monoxide poisoning starts at a lower level and has greater effect b/c even if you are removed from the gas the red blood cells are still unable to transport Oxygen for a significant period of time.

Painless, wow you wouldn't think, eh. Of course "painless" is kind of subjective. I tried this once when I was a kid, but it didn't seem fair to just drop the trap and leave it for awhile (kind of like chickening out or taking the easy way out.
"Knowing" an animal is drowning, might be uncomfortable to think about (pain or not), but watching an animal while it drowns......stuff of nightmares!

Oh I totally agree that watching is terrible... I know the first time my friend threw a trap in the pond it floated a bit... he said that was tough. Next time he tied weight to submerge it quick. Personally I am well off enough to spend the nickel on a 22 round. But its also in the country, I know if it was in town and we had coon issues then the big rubbermaid garbage can is definitely an option. In the end I would say 22lr then drowning then last resort be poison. Personally I have a harder time poisoning something as who knows how long it will take.

"Raccoons are really tough. A pellet gun won't kill it, not even a high power .177. Use a .22lr."

THAT is not entirely accurate. And I can post threads from those who've done it regularly. The kicker being that it works fine on small and medium 'coons, at 15 yards or less, and you have to make the effort to learn the head anatomy. Placement is key. But never use anything less than 22lr on the big ones. And even then, poor placement may mean you have an angry one on your hands to fend off.

Shot, literally, a pile of coons in my youth( when hides were worth $30-$60 or more and 75-100 a year was good money for a 13 year old and add in $15 dollar muskrats I was living large) and I will say that the average coon is tough, get a big one and I have bounced 22 yellowjackets and CCI off there skulls. I remember one in a tree that I hit 6 times in the head( I thought i had knocked the sights) was maybe 40ft up, before a neck shot finally brought him down. That was the worse one but not the only one that took a direct head shot with no penetration. When I pulled the hide off him all 6 had hit him but not a one penetrated. May have been the angle but 2 were still in the hide right between the eyes. Caught hell from the old man for shooting up a good hide though. Pellet guns are simply inadequate for the task at hand

I'd assume a point blank pellet gun shot straight into the ear canal would do a raccoon in, maybe up to a medium sized one?
I’m guessing because I have no experience with raccoons, hell, I’ve only seen two in my whole life.

I think I would only try that if I wanted to euthanize one caught in a live trap and wanted to keep the assassination quite.
Personally though, if I had one in a live trap I would take the little heathen out in the bush somewhere and let it go.

If my goal was to outright kill them off and it was at a location where I could legally shoot, I wouldn’t use anything smaller than a .22
