Purchasing SKS for first gun, what to look for?(purchased now, pics post 98)

"Lever Arms lost their import license a while ago, and the ones they have in stock are second picks from dealers who can still import."

Well say what you will about how they service is, or used to be, that is just an outright lie.
There is a thread over in green/black shotguns all about the shotgun they developed and imported.

If untrue, then I apologize, I was mis-informed.

But my understanding is that they're using other companies to do the actual importing, whether or not they have an exclusive.

As far as I'm concerned, there are only two types of SKS rifles: collectors and shooters. Collectors should not ever be shot, and shooters should be bought as cheap as possible. I'd buy the cheapest Russian I could get my hands on.

If you can wait, there's the annual 2 day gun show happening in Chilliwack in March. I'm sure Corwin Arms is going to be there as well as some other vendors. See if you can get him to bring a beauty down and hold it for you.

I have two collectors and I shoot them on a regular basis. However, I don't fire more than 100 rounds in a single sitting. It doesn't make sense to not shoot it since one of my Lee Enfields is worth 4 of those SKS and yet I still use it.

no gun should be left collecting dust...
Let them have fresh air
Let them be enjoyed

sorry went off topic there

get one that you like

If you shoot them regularly, they aren't collectors, they are shooters. There are SKS rifles in this country worth $4000+, just
because most of the ones you see are $200, it doesn't mean they all are. Canadians as a whole under appreciate the rare SKS models, and a relatively small group of collectors quietly tuck away a lot of the really desirable and valuable stuff.

You wouldn't want to get drunk for the first time with Kelly's wine
Or hopefully not have ### for the first time with a skank
so why would you want your first gun to a slutty SKS??
YOU DESERVE BETTER. Get yourself a nice rifle first. Just so you
know that guns can shoot "groups" , and not "shotgun type patterns"
After you get a nice rifle and then a nice shotgun THEN get a lead hose.
just my completely biased viewpoint

I would recommend you order from Corwin-Arms or Westrifle instead of going to Lever. Or from Weimajack here in the Equipment Exchange.

All three of them have forgotten more about SKS's than most of us will ever know, and are reputable enough to only sell good quality examples.

Lever Arms lost their import license a while ago, and the ones they have in stock are second picks from dealers who can still import.

Would this be true for all their rifles? I was considering a zastava 17hmr from them. Would it too be "second grade"?

Just pay Tradex Canada $179.00 for a nice Russian SKS delivered to your door. Then clean it thoroughly, test fire it. Best SKS deal in Canada now.
Or you could order a crateful from Lever Arms.
Tradex has good pricing on ammo and a free shipping offer on specified amounts.
Canada Ammo has good pricing on ammo and a free shipping offer on specified amounts and also has SKS and accessories too.
Maybe your local Canadian Tire,
Always clean your completely disassembled SKS thoroughly and immediately after each time you are shooting especially if using corrosive ammo, and most of it is.

Im going to be purchasing a SKS the same day my PAL arrives(hopefully soon...)

Im looking for a shooter as I intend to use it to learn how to shoot a rifle so see myself putting many 1000's of rounds through it.

So what should I be looking for? newer/older model? refurbished or not refurbished?

Will be purchasing from Lever arms in Vancouver so will be able to go in person to look through the stock so want to know what I should be looking for.

I just realized you are in the same neighborhood as Lever Arms go there and pick one out you like.

Purchasing SKS for first gun, what to look for?
Something else.
If you want to learn to shoot, and shoot well, there are better choices.

Tradex is $199 plus tax and at least $35 in shipping $179 may be they were but few months ago. Guys keep in mind that nowadays we have 2 sorts of SKSs on the market. Whatever is left from Ukrainian supplies, meaning generally good rifles original nice blueing and Recent import of BBQ painted guns from Molot

Man you crazy. An SKS was my first centerfire gun (1st gun was a 22). I now own a few more guns, and don't regret the sks one bit.

Is it accurate like a bolt action rifle? Hell no. Can it hit a pop can at 40 yards? Better believe it.

Its all about expectations. Besides, who didn't get drunk the first time on something cheap? It was cheap bourbon for me...
