.44 Special brass availability?

For you guys shooting .44 Special, where are you getting your brass from and what brand is it? I see some places stocking Hornady but I refuse to pay close to $1 per case for it.

do you have a case forming die for 44 special?- or is the gun you're using actually a 44 mag and you want to use 44 special loads in it?44 mag brass is by far more plentiful; and if it is a 44 mag, just leave it at length as firing 44 specials in a 44 mag chamber will leave the "crud ring" ahead of the case- you avoid this by using 44 mag brass-if it HAS to be 44 special, it's a few strokes of a file or a pipe cutter to change 44 mag to 44 special- just use your calipers to measure the difference

It's a .44 Spl. pistol. If it were a .44 Mag I'd just shoot reduced loads and not bother with Spl. cases.

t-star: I've already involved myself in making cases with the .300 Blackout and simply don't have the time or inclination to be bothered with another cartridge where modifying cases was necessary. I'd sell the gun first before having to do that. I appreciate your post though!

Yeah, but unlike 300 Blackout all you need to do to a .44 Mag case is cut it down by 1/8", chamfer and then reload it. I do understand not wanting to cut down a few hundred (or a few thousand!) cases in a batch though.

Just buy some factory ammo shoot it and then you have some cases, that is what I am doing for 44 Mag. A heads up though I went through this with 45 Colt and bought some Hornady cowboy loads and the brass came up about 60 thousandths short compared to other brands ( and standard specs.).
