Headspace was not measured with the bolt. A headspace quage was inserted into the chamber and fitted to the locking shoulder on the breech. The bolt did not come into it. Headspace was changed by repaceing the locking shoulder with a different size.
You can of course use your normal .308 type guage but that is not how it was done by the armourers.
