Favourite Non Restricted Black Rifle under 1000

I owned a mini-14 in a Sparta... Meh. Sold it.
I owned a SU-16 with AR stock.... Liked it, but sold it.
I own a FTU T97. I like it, but the FTU makes it over a grand.... But I traded... So.... Winner?
I owned a VZ 58... Too long. And limited to 5rounds of 7.62... Sold it.

Ya i wasn't a huge fan of the mini in the sparta stock, but that gun in a butler creek folder is very fun, small and light as well.

Vz58 would be my first choice for the price, but a new one is rarely under $1000 these days - especially if you are looking for the chrome lined barrel version. A mini 14 in a 580/581 series would also be a good choice if someone wanted a gun that didn't have that military-esque look.

Easy choice. my Ruger SR-22. Now before any complain about it only being a .22, it looks more like a true black rifle then any of the other NR black rifles for under $1,000.

Also in it's favour is how much more ammo./mag.'s one can hump (if needed) plus legally available 25Rd.+ mag. capacity and the fact the rifle and ammo. is quite affordable and quiet to shoot.

Now if centre-fire ammo. is to be part of the equation then my pick would be a JR carbine in 9mm.

Cheers D

I won't knock you for the Ruger Sr-22, to be honest I never truly considered a .22.... interesting thought process !

Between Mini 14/30 & Vz58 for me.

AR's have been getting closer to that price point.

Restricted unfortunately.

AR-180B for AR-lookalike.

SU-16 for not so scary looking.

Still have both.

Never had a Mini-14.

But if ARs were non-restricted I wouldn't even look at the others.

I had a T97… it was ok in my opinion it felt cheep. My go to is 100% my tavor but for $1000 my 9mm jr carbine has never ever let me down.

I heard the .45ACP JR's were plagued with FTF/FTE issues. Has that been fixed?

Mini-14 for sure if you can find one new
Remington 7615p good luck finding one new
Norinco T97 they are every where
the last 2 take AR mags which is better than the Mini-14 but I just love the Mini better

Between the VZ58 and T97, I think I would go T97 but haven't bought it yet (and never owned a VZ58) so I'm speaking out of turn. But I do have the FTU, getting the LHG and T97 when the LHG is done. Anyone that want's a new condition Kel Tec SU16FX with fab defense survival stock and witt comp at this price point PM me.

JRC has fixed the issue on newer ones and on older ones there's a fix available, or you can just cut some off the mag spring.

I like my JRC in 40SW but it hasn't really seen much daylight since I bought an HK SL8. JRC is fun to shoot, but the 40SW is not gonna be doing anything more than a couple of hundred yards.

I was thinking about a T97, but then I saw a couple at the range and was turned off by the size of the dent the ejector puts on the spent case - made it look very iffy for reloading (and I reload a lot of .223).

For under a grand I think you're either buying a PCC (like the JRC) or go for the VZ. Or if you want .22 - then SR-22 ftw.
