To Scope or Not to Scope.......That is the Question.......

... but you're ugly anyhow...why does the rifle need to be beautiful?

But, but, but... his radiant smile really illuminates his best features... especially standing over downed game... you wouldn't want him to do that with an ugly gun would you???

The other aspect we must keep in mind, is that I'm not talking about drilling and tapping the rib on a 500-465 Holland & Holland Royal with hand detachable sidelocks and full coverage engraving..........it is after all just a Merkel, a working man's double........I wouldn't be committing heresy or anything like that............Hell, it's even got a dedicated spot in the case for a scope with rings.

But wait........maybe this means I need another double, with factory scope base setup and rings...........Sorry Angus but for me, for elephant, the 375 H&H is just a tad light in my opinion..........I'm thinking maybe another 470 NE or better maybe another in 500 NE or maybe even a Heym in 577 NE.........have lusted after a 577 for years...........NNNAAAAAA, think I'll save that money and put it towards more elephants..........

Now all I have to do is convince a doctor that this foray is essential to curing my debilitating phobia of being terminated by an elephant and I can get my new B.C. medical to pay for the therapy...........Not asking for opinions on that last statement, just musing out loud, so to speak......;);):eek:

below the 600NE there is nothing for you.

Phil

Regardless of the final choice, I'd sure like a few square feet of tanned elephant hide for sheath material. 10 or 20 should do nicely!

I suppose you want me to pay for the skiving and tanning too..............I'll fetch you back all the elephant ##### sheath hide for tanning that you want..........you know "an eye for an eye and a sheath for a sheath".............

I hate to go against my Fudd roots, but have you given any consideration to something like a RMR or other reflex-sight? No parallax, no magnification, limited obstruction of the field of view, highly visible even under failing light. They should be ideally suited to the task. Sure, they look like a satellite dish mounted on a steam locomotive, but you're ugly anyhow...why does the rifle need to be beautiful?

+1 for the RMR sight. Given the need and application, I think it's really the best solution to the problem -- with the added benefit of turning that .470 double into a passable plains game rifle at modest ranges.

You two are just jerking my chain, right..........do you really think I'd put one of those black rifle abortions on even an ugly double? Well hell maybe I can get synthetic stocks and one of them pica ninny rails and mount some flash bulbs and hand guard for when she goes full auto and a couple flash hiders and hell we might as well go for a pair of muzzle brakes while were at it so the recoil doesn't shake off all my tacticool sh!t.

Don't forget the barrel shroud as well! Seriously I'm not sure how your mount works but I would look for one like they use on the valmet combo guns. Throw a lever to detach. No reason not to scope it, especially if it makes you more comfortable.

Ahhhh the days of a 7x57 killing elephants are long gone... brain shots don't require massive power though. What are the regulations on minimum cartridge?

Paint your SUV "Elephant Grey", stand 20 meters away and try to draw a bead on the kill zone (drivers door)... An elephant has gotta be a mass of amorphous blur through a scope at close range... but of course, if it is that close, you will likely just point and shoot.

Truth be told, you know heck of a lot more than moi on hunting elephants... I've never done it and don't ever plan too... I do want to do a plains game trip some day... retirement is only a couple years away (at the most)...

Don't forget the vertical foregrip. Very handy for the recoil.

A lot of Gerrman doubles used for driven wild boar / stag hunts are equipped with good reflex sights like the Docter III. You may want to look into them, they are not too ugly, the risk of a battery failure seems remote, and they do work very well. There are good QD mounts available for the Merkel.
