Found a new Marlin Papoose!

I only have a brick + of Velocitor as it is my hunting ammo so I don't buy tons of it. That and it is pretty expensive stuff. The other CCI ammo that I think your are talking about is either Quik-Shoks or Stingers. I don't much care for Stingers and I haven't seen Quik Shoks in a long time. I also have about 5 bricks of the Winchester 555 stuff so I will try that out too. Hopefully this rifle will like one of these two as there is hardly anything else available in town right now.

Nope, neither Quick-Shoks or Stingers... Just Segmented Hollow Points - which is confusing because they have two products with exactly the same name. One is a "Quiet" low velocity version, the other is this stuff, a hyper-velocity version.

The bullet itself shatters on impact (frangible), so the terminal effect on gophers is... well... pretty darned terminal.

Packing up and heading out to the range in a few, I'll let you know how the ProMag mags run. Got my new 795 cleaned up, so I'll give them a try both in the Papoose and the 795.

Ok, here's my results with the ProMags:

Exactly the same as MMATT had. Fed flawlessly, bolt hold open was a no show. Ran all three mags through my Papoose three times, and once each through my new 795. Not one FTF or FTE, no jams at all. The bolt hold open only worked once.

Overall: Quite happy with that. I've tried the Steel Lips and HC3R (err, whatever they're called) in my 10/22, and once in a blue moon they won't cause a jam.

Notch this up as one more win in my personal little competition between the 795 platform and the 10/22. Getting harder and harder to find any love for my 10/22, when the Marlins just work.

Glad to see the Pro-mags work relatively well for you too. :) Do you find that the scope will hold zero between barrel installations? Or have you tested for that yet? By that I mean, off sandbags at 50 yards.

It circles around within about 1/2" or so of zero at 25yards, although that could very well be the shooter. The scope has a German post reticle, which really isn't a "bulls-eye" reticle, but quite effective for the type of shooting you do practically with a gun like this. Combined with the fact that the Papoose is a royal pain in the @ss to shoot of sandbags because of the shortened fore-end, it makes it really hard to get repeatable results off the bench.

Drilling "gopher sized objects" at 25-50 yards consistently between barrel installs is pretty straightforward, so whether or not it holds a true, perfect zero is somewhat irrelevant. It holds close enough for the intended purpose.

Excellent. Thanks for the reply. I've heard the same from other Papoose owners and I've had similar results with mine. In the end though, I decided that my papoose was going to be an iron sight rifle only. With both sights mounted directly on the barrel, a wandering zero is eliminated altogether.

On a slightly related note, how do you like the iron sights? I found them to be rather 'clunky' and not really lending themselves to any sort of accuracy beyond 25 yards or so. I went so far as to swap them out for the sights off of my 795 (which permanently wears a scope). I found the narrow post and smaller rear notch to give me much better accuracy, but that just might be personal preference.

gotta find me a papoose..... +1 on the 25rd pro mags. mine are awesome. bolt hold open doesn't work on mine either but that's fine, the 795 is also more accurate than the 10/22 as well in all the mini tests my friends and I did, we all shot the 795 more accurately than the sr 22 and 10/22, best part is you can almost buy 2 for the price of 1 10/22

Thanks for the review on the Pro-Mag, I will look to get one when I am up in Edmonton next. I am waiting for some time off work and nice weather to go out and site in a bunch of rifles. The iron sights on mine seem pretty good so I won't upgrade until I actually try mine out. I prefer peep sights but with the Papoose being a take down I don't think it is possible to have any peeps on it. Perhaps a dovetail scope mount with an IER scope may be the ticket?

grelmar. That range looks very familiar. That video must have been shot a few weeks ago. As long as I can pop gophers out to 50 yds with my Papoose, I'll be a happy camper. Its strictly for carrying on the Bike. I have other more accurate stuff for the serious gopher shooting which should be upon us soon. May pick up a Stainless Marlin Model 60 too, when they become available. Blue/wood($190.) and Blue/syn($159.) ones available at Bass Pro now if anyone's interested.

I never even shot it with the open sights, to be honest. At my age, with my eyes, I scope most things.

The open sights on the 795 are pretty reasonable, though.

Check out 'Tech-Sights' if you are looking for peep sights.

great news!! I set out with a mission today, found me a papoose, cant wait to play with it loaded, very excited, I have to say I love the way it takes down, seems very durable, nice little carry case and I already got my 25 rd promags plus 3 10 rounders from my 795, it will be in operation soon.

this site costs me a fortune, thanks for the great papoose reviews, lol, yet another "must have" down.

LOL! The Papoose fever is on... they are pretty neat guns. Not a lot of take downs out there and the papoose seems to be the most practical without all of the gimmicky things added in.

I have one of the norinco jw-20 {I think is the model} takedown, the browning clone, and the papoose far and away has a better takedown mechanism and funny part is, its easier, the jw20 was very inexpensive and I really have no complaints with it, it does a fine job eating ammo however if I had spent the cash on the browning I would not be happy with the takedown mechanism if in fact it was the same as the nork.
the store I went to had 2 papooses in stock so I picked it out of the 2, bearing in mind the comments about canted sights, both of these seemed pretty good but the one I picked was slightly better..
papoose fever is on, lol, I can see putting this in the bike, the quad and boat regularly this year, cheers

Actually, I shot that video on Sunday :) I was going to the range anyway, so made a point of taking the Papoose and the new mags to check them out for this discussion.

hey guys, a little update, had the papoose out today the good news, cycling and functionally the gun was as flawless as my 795, I did have a couple downsides though, my sights are slightly canted, it shoots about 5 inches right of point of aim, not sure if those sights are adjustable left to right, not a huge deal as I want to put some form of optic on it anyway. bigger problem being, my pro mag 25 rounders, when loaded into my papoose the magazine disconnect lever pushes too high up into the action causing the bolt to hit the magazine disconnect lever and only closing half way, it actually bent the lever, after disassembly and straightening out of the lever I tried once more s l o w l y it hits again, I don't want to mod the mag as they work perfect in my 795, however I may take the mag disconnect mechanism out of the equation, any thoughts or similar experiences?

westarm. If you look carefully where the barrel screws in to that bushing, you will see that the slot at the bottom which accepts the flat part of the barrel is not exactly in the middle, where it should be. This causes the barrel and sights to be canted right or left. Found the easiest thing to do while aiming the rifle is to cant it which ever direction you need to, to get the perfect sight picture. If you try to hold the gun perfectly level you will have the problem you describe.

thanks for the info, I will most certainly try that, the rifle groups very well with the irons so getting used to it should have decent results, thank you, cheers
