I'm not quite sure where to post this, but since it was found at the Regimental Museum I volunteer at I'm going to call it Milsurp. They guys there seem to think it was an old RCMP Uniform, but I haven't found anything like it on where I've looked. I'll post some pics below.

you can see how the fur looks like a buffalo coat

It has a slight brim that is a little hard to see in the picture.

Its also quilted on the inside.

A bit blurry, but you can see the brim more in this one.

I'm hoping someone here will recognize it and fill me in on it, were all wondering what it is.

Thanks.

Dunno about the original purpose, but that is one seriously badass hat. The only better way to keep one's ears warm would be by having Sofia Vergara clutch one's head 'twixt her silken thighs.

I'd be afraid to wear that for fear of getting shot. Prop from Jeremiah Johnson Or maybe a Yeti scalp. Google that one. :)

Did some quick poking around, and oddly, the only pic I could find that was even close to that in style, is this one of Ben Franklin in a beaver fur hat...

What material is the quilted lining made of?

Can't say what the liner is, as its in the storage room of the museum and I'm not there till Tuesday If I had to guess I would say cotton.

I did a bit more searching and, other than the lack of patches, it looks like a fur Wedge cap that was issued to the Canadian military and RCMP in the early 20th century. If it is in fact that, it it seems that it isn't Buffalo fur, but lamb hide.

Makes sense...

Buffalo hide/fur tends to be pretty stiff. Not sure how much fun that would be to wear.

Of course, the military has always prided itself on fun/comfortable clothing :nest:
